Anya Taylor-Joy on the Journey of Making 'Furiosa- A Mad Max Saga' and Shaving Her Head for the Role

  • Anya Taylor-Joy was first introduced to the Mad Max franchise by watching Mad Max: Fury Road, though was previously aware of it tangentially. She watched the film with fellow cast members from the sci-fi film Morgan and stood up and clapped when it was over.[1] Prior to being cast, she received a text from Edward Wright, a filmmaker she had previously worked with, who told her that George Miller wished to talk with her. As it was mid-lockdown, the two conducted as FaceTime session in which he asked her questions such as "How good are you on a motorcycle?" and "Are you willing to do your own stunts?"[2] In casting Taylor-Joy, Miller discovered certain overlaps between her and Furiosa's original actress, Charlize Theron, such as the two both having trained from an early age in ballet.[3]
  • Although the moment in which Furiosa cuts her hair is depicted in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Taylor-Joy did not actually cut her hair for the film, the effect of the character's baldness instead being created via a bald cap. This was because upon seeing her hair, George Miller did not want her to cut it and also because scenes in the film were being shot out of order.[4] Trailers for the film depict a scene of Furiosa actually cutting off her hair, but as Taylor-Joy explains "That's a second bald cap that has hair that I can actually cut."[5]
  • During the filming of Furiosa, Taylor-Joy adopted a kitten named "Kitsune," who came with her every day, feeling that she needed to funnel her love into something, that her brain told her she needed something to nurture. Even under her Furiosa makeup, the cat wasn't scared of her.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Anya played "Margot" in 2022's The Menu, the girlfriend of Fury Road alum, Nicholas Hoult's "Tyler."
