The Wind Lance was a giant ranged weapon used by the Men of Dale and of Lake-town in the Third Age.
In adaptations[]
The Hobbit film trilogy[]
They were crafted by the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain. The wind lance itself resembles a giant crossbow or ballista (an ancient Roman weapon). It first appeared in Peter Jackson's film trilogy.
In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Lord Girion of Dale mounts black arrows on to the Wind lance and fires them at Smaug during a flashback. One of the arrows hits its mark but only loosens a scale. Girion is killed before he can finish Smaug off with the final black arrow.[1]
In The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the Dwarves see the wind lance on the top of the tower.[2]
Finally, in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition, Smaug destroys the wind lance, which forces Bard to use his son, Bain, as the bow for the Black Arrow.[3]
