The Quest of Erebor is the third chapter of Part Three of Unfinished Tales.
Summary[]
This chapter is told from the perspective of Gandalf, who reveals his motivations for setting the quest in motion, including his fear that Sauron would turn the dragon Smaug to his side. Gandalf was pondering these matters when he chanced upon Thorin II Oakenshield in Bree, where the two discussed their options.
Gandalf voiced his belief that Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, would be a crucial element in the success of the proposed venture, noting that hobbits were remarkably stealthy, and that Smaug had never smelled his kind before. Gandalf found difficulty in overcoming Thorin's objections to taking Bilbo, believing hobbits to be incapable of such deeds. Eventually, however, Gandalf was able to persuade Thorin that Bilbo could be an asset to the Dwarf's company.
