The Seat of Seeing, by Ralph Damiani
The Seat of Seeing, also known as the Seat of Amon Hen, was an ancient stone chair at the summit of Amon Hen. Surrounded by a battlement in the midst of a flat stone circle, the seat was built atop four carven pillars and was reached by a long staircase.[1]
History[]
The Seat of Seeing was established at the northern frontier of the kingdom of Gondor by the Kings of Gondor. It was made in the days of the great kings,[2] possibly during the reign of Rómendacil II.
At the time of the War of the Ring it too, like Amon Lhaw, had long been abandoned and fallen into ruin. The last remaining feature of this once-extensive building was the high seat itself, an observation point situated at the top of the hill and overlooking the River Anduin far below. It was as this time that Frodo Baggins came upon the seat following his encounter with Boromir, before the breaking of the Fellowship, and from it could see several locations at great distance, including Minas Tirith and Barad-dûr.[1]
