Poppy Proudfellow was a Harfoot hobbit living in the Second Age. She was a friend of Elanor Brandyfoot.[1]
Biography[]
Poppy dwelt in Rhovanion; a member of the tribe led by Sadoc Burrows. She was orphaned at a young age, when her father Chance, mother Yarrow, and siblings Strap, Dewis, and Linseed were killed in a landslide.
She accompanies her friend Elanor to an abandoned farm near Norfield Glen along with a number of Harfoot-children, where they discover a grove of wild blackberries. The venture is cut short when Elanor becomes aware of a foreboding wolf-print left in the mud.
A short time later, Poppy and Elanor witness what appears to be a meteorite fall from the sky, and upon traveling to the site, discover a mysterious stranger in the crater. Poppy is cautious, and warns her friend from investigating further, though to no avail. Begrudgingly, she aids Elanor in transporting the unconscious stranger to shelter, and later to visit him again, when he displays the ability to seemingly communicate with fireflies, creating with them the form of a constellation. Elanor sneaks into Sadoc Burrows' tent to search through his book for information about the indicated constellation, while Poppy reluctantly stands watch for her.
Poppy accompanies the Brandyfoot family as they follow the caravan east, from Norfield Glen to the Grove, and along the way are nearly killed by wolves, from which the Stranger rescues them. At the Grove, the Stranger leaves to keep from endangering the small folk, but is seen to be pursued by the Dweller and two other mystics. Poppy, Elanor, Marigold, Malva and Sadoc go to warn him, but quickly are cornered by the evil women, and barely rescued by the Stranger, who has recovered much of his memory. Afterwards, it is decided that Elanor should leave to travel into the east with The Stranger, and Poppy reaffirms her friendship and sadness due to Elanor's leaving.
