The Great Shelf, also known as the Eyrie, was the most important eagles' eyrie in the northern Misty Mountains, where the Lord of the Eagles and his chieftains dwelt during the Third Age.[1]

The Great Shelf was located at a high point on the east side of the Misty Mountains, facing Rhovanion, between the Rushdown and the Menn-i-Naugrim. It was approximately thirty-five miles from the Carrock near Beorn's hall.[1][2][3][4]

History[]

It is untold when the Lord of the Eagles and his fifteen chieftains[5] first settled the Great Shelf.

On July 19, TA 2941, the Great Eagles rescued Thorin and Company from the meeting-place of the Orcs and Wargs. After which, Bilbo Baggins and Dori were taken to one of the eagles' eyries of the North before the eagle who brought them there was bidden to take them to the Great Shelf to see the Lord of the Eagles. Upon arriving at the Great Shelf, Thorin and Company were given leave by the Lord of the Eagles to light a fire to cook rabbits, hares, and sheep. where they spent the night.[1]

The next day, after it was revealed that the Eagles rescued the Dwarves because Gandalf had previously healed the Lord of the Eagles of an arrow-wound in the past,[1] the Lord of the Eagles and his chieftains took Thorin and Company from the Great Shelf to the Carrock.[5]

Whether Gwaihir was one of the fifteen chieftains dwelling at the Great Shelf is unknown.

Trivia[]

Despite Tolkien never using the capitalized term "Eagles' Eyrie" for the place, the name became prevalent among fans of Tolkien.
