The Return of the Shadow est une études de textes non publié de Tolkien par son fils Christopher Tolkien. C'est le sixième tome de l'Histoire de la Terre du Milieu.
Conception[]
Christopher Tolkien étudie les premières ébauches du futur Seigneur des Anneaux, qui diffèrent en de nombreux points du texte final : Aragorn n'existe pas encore, et celui que les Hobbits croisent à Bree n'est qu'un de leurs congénères nommé Trotter. Sylvebarbe, bien loin de l'Ent qu'il deviendra, est encore un géant maléfique responsable de l'absence de Gandalf lors du départ de Frodon.
