A key thing to remember is that the difficulties Roger talks about are not complaints about the people who wrote the spec – Roger was one of they key people who wrote it, and very deliberate decisions were made to make life slightly harder for the dozens of people implementing the spec in order to make life simpler for the millions of people who will in future be writing code using the spec.
Time will tell whether “people who will in future be writing code using the spec” would have been happier with a fixed-width 256 bit ISA in the style of AVX10/256.
