Which radio is it? I tend to presume baofeng, but I haven’t seen that configuration. Though, I’m no expert, I certainly haven’t seen all the models/packages.
7.5vdc when you were expecting 5vdc is more salty than spicy. Spicy is 120vac capacitively coupled through your dc adapter because someone thought grounding was optional.
While most battery charger ICs are rated well above 12V and DC-DC converters likewise (and would actually work better with higher voltage).
Linear regulators, on the other hand, would produce 2.5× as much heat and in some cases there could be an MCU like ATMEGA sitting right on top of VBUS, being rated 5.5V maximum. Then it might drive a motor or a solenoid coil, both possibly rated at 5.5V. Those might overheat and fail.
I am all for hacks that reuse commonly available cables and ports, because those simply are ubiquitous and cheap, but all such hacks should be extra visibly labeled as such.
oh, yeah, I also had one of these come with a pump that wasn’t the one it was supposed to come with. a friend with an electronics background informed me that that’s apparently really common, that (I think, but this may be backwards) DC pumps are cheaper than AC pumps and wear out faster in this scenario. apparently people selling bootlegs of consumer products will often swap these components out.
I have a cheap digital amateur radio I bought that includes a 12V adapter with a USB port.
:-o

It’s a Radioddity GD-77
Ah thanks, I’ve had my license for a while but am still quite new so its helpful to see other affordable radios.
Also another important take away from the story - cats got spoiled and now drinks only from fountain.
Same story here with the same fountain :) Cat hydration has to be a good thing, so I can’t complain.
it makes sense when you hear it, right? in the wild, moving water is more likely to be safe to drink than still
Yes, I was trying to get a cat few days back and posted a question in pets.stackexchange and they told me to get a fountain(s) too.
In the end I was denied by landlord. so I’m sad until I can afford a mortgage. :(
I’ve heard: Cats don’t see still water. They can make it move and then realize it’s there.

Definitely not safe.

My roommate got one of those and the second I saw that it was USB powered I knew it would break down within a year. It did, of course.
