Planning Workbook: Building a Police Violence Video Database

This workbook, created by WITNESS in collaboration with El Grito de Sunset Park, provides a comprehensive guide for organizing, preserving, and analyzing large collections of police violence videos. It offers step-by-step instructions, worksheets, and ethical guidelines to help communities document abuses, ensure security, and leverage video evidence for advocacy. These worksheets reflect years of WITNESS expertise and existing resources, including, our Video as Evidence Field Guide and Activists’ Guide to Archiving Videos.

The workbook reflects learnings from our collaboration with El Grito on the project, Profiling the Police: Using Video as a Source of Data About Police Abuse. WITNESS also partnered with Berkeley Copwatch to further develop a People’s Database for Community-based Police Accountability. Learn about the project and explore resources here.
