General Guidelines
It is the responsibility of each individual to ensure that her/his use of NPS electronic resources complies with U.S. Copyright Law and does not breach the Terms and Conditions specified in the license agreements between NPS and various vendors.
Terms and Conditions vary by title and by publisher. Licenses define the permitted and not permitted uses of electronic resources, and while the contracts are specific, general guidelines are in the table below. Breach of terms of use may result in suspension of your NPS network account and/or other disciplinary actions and may result in a loss of access for all members of the NPS community.

Permitted
- Using e-resources for scholarly, educational or research, teaching, and private study purposes.
- Viewing, downloading, copying, printing, and saving a copy of search results for your own personal, educational, or research use.
- Viewing, downloading, copying, printing, and saving individual articles or book chapters for your own personal, educational, or research use.
- Sending a copy of an article or book chapter to another authorized NPS user, i.e., current NPS faculty, student or staff.
- Posting just the URL link to the publisher's version of the article not a PDF or copy of the article on a class website. Publisher links will only allow access by authorized users.
Important exception: posting URL links to Harvard Business Review articles is expressly prohibited!
Not Permitted
- Use of robots or intelligent agents to do systematic, bulk, or automatic downloading.
- Systematic downloading or printing of entire journal issues or volumes, or multiple chapters of books or proceedings. There are a few exceptions: SPRINGER allows full-book downloads for your own personal, educational, or research use.
- Using e-resources for commercial gain, i.e., you may not resell, redistribute, or republish licensed content.
- Sending a copy of an article or book chapter to unauthorized users, i.e., you may not email, send to a mailing list, or post on social websites.
- Posting the publisher's version or PDF of an article to a class website. Instead, post the URL link to the publisher's version of the article. Publisher links will only allow access by authorized users.
