The Caltech Library has a long history of making the scholarly works of Caltech researchers available, hosting and preserving the content online. Recently, we have designed a publishing platform that will help researchers share their findings widely with minimal cost and substantial impact. The Library can now publish researcher-led, open access journals and books that serve the academic community.
The Library’s most recent open access publications include the journal microPublication Biology and multimedia textbook Atlas of Bacterial and Archaeal Cell Structure. Following the success of these publications, the Library can now work with the Institute’s researchers to produce multimedia, open access texts across all disciplines.
The Library is committed to developing new platforms of scholarly communication and publishing to meet the needs of modern researchers—with all the academic rigor of print publishing but without the traditional overhead or technology limitations. We encourage Caltech researchers to submit proposals for future publishing program projects. You can contact us at [email protected].
Caltech Library supports the publication of open access e-books and journals from individuals or research groups with a compelling idea and the text, data, and media files associated with the project. Publications are made available through open access channels, and they can be shared globally with readers, researchers, and educators.

The Library supports the publication of either whole books via the CaltechAUTHORS repository or we can work with authors to create dynamic books hosted on the web and preserved with a permanent DOI in the CaltechDATA repository. Examples include the textbook Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, second edition and the multimedia textbook Atlas of Bacterial and Archaeal Cell Structure.
