Climate Watch

Since 2016, Climate Watch volunteers have collected data which Audubon scientists are able to use to document in peer reviewed research that birds are responding to climate change and shifting their ranges.

Volunteers observe birds in their area, using a specific protocol. Data helps Audubon scientists learn about how birds are responding to the changing climate.

Occurring annually since 1900, the CBC is the longest running community science project in the world. Birders of all experience levels are welcome to join us for a day of birding in mid-to-late December. The count generates data that builds our understanding of bird populations.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Great Backyard Bird Count

Each February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds in the Great Backyard Bird Count.

Over these four days birders of all levels are invited to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us.

These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. Learn more.

Militia Hill Hawk Watch

Militia Hill Hawk Watch

Each fall migrating raptors by the thousands begin their journey southward. For the last 27 years, a hawk watch has been held at Militia Hill in Fort Washington State Park to record their passage.

The Militia Hill Hawk Watch has had an impressive tabulation of raptor species and numbers since 1988. The average season count is 11,446 raptors with a total of 309,044 in our twenty-seven years. All 16 species of raptors that migrate on the east coast are spotted on a regular basis.

The more participants we have, the more birds we are able to spot and identify. And, there’s always a compiler on the hill to help and answer questions. Learn more here or reach out to Rich Conroy ([email protected]).

Greater Philadelphia Birdathon

Greater Philadelphia Birdathon

The Greater Philadelphia Birdathon is a 24-hour, friendly birding competition that takes place annually in early May. Whether you’ve been birding for decades or just started noticing the birds in your backyard, all skill levels are welcome to participate, because this event is all about one thing: celebrating and supporting bird populations, together.

Birdathon teams help raise funds for their choice of non-profit conservation organization, birding organization, or Bird Town. Teams can even raise funds for a specific project of their choosing that seeks to do any or all of the following:

    • Protect birds and their habitat,
    • Make our communities bird friendly,
    • Make birding more accessible and inclusive for all.
