I like big pandas, they are fluffy and pretty.
I still think that these Pixar films rely, way too often, on familiar storylines and some basic themes instead of trying something new and daring. Turning Red does thankfully introduce a great cast of characters and its central conflict with the family and the youngster is interestingly put. For example, the way Meilin chooses her family over her friends makes the conflict feel very real and complicated and the film treats those traumas of growing up in a very mature and respective manner. Much like Petite Maman in the arthouse crowd, Turning Red also puts the relationships between mothers and daughters interestingly into a continuum and shows how repressed dreams turn into something bitter. The reconciliation between Meilin and Ming is honestly touching and I hope that mothers and daughters around the world sit together and create memories over this film. Who knows, perhaps such films can break the silence?
