"My life is going by so fast, but it’s not getting anywhere."
— Sam Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle)
(I thought that feeling was specific to the Covid-19 generation, but apparently young adults have felt like this for a longer time.)
Having arrived the weekend before, I overcame my jet lag just in time for Thanksgiving, which I had to spend alone because all my American friends were celebrating with their families, but since I'm not American I don't care much for this holiday, so it was fine and I just tried to have a nice day with myself. I went to the beach (in November! In Europe we can only dream of that) and then to the cinema; the movie I had picked was The Fabelmans.
What I had heard about it before going in sounded great, characters who dream of becoming moviemakers are always relatable to me, and I was looking forward to seeing just that. That's only part of this movie though, a lot of it is also a family drama, and that part was actually not too relatable for me, I guess that's because my family is very different than this one. I heard that people with a similar backstory really like it though and can absolutely relate, so I appreciate that Steven Spielberg apparently managed to capture this experience so well. And I still had a good time watching it.
As I expected, I loved the cinematography. There were a lot of very creative camera movements on display here, and they were all super clean, I was a huge fan of that since I don't love a shaky camera. The whole look of the movie was great in general, costumes, production design, editing and color grading were all so good. Also, Gabriel LaBelle is gonna be a star if he wants to keep on acting. And that cameo at the end of the movie (that I won't spoil for you, but please go see it for yourself) is instantly iconic.
My Steven Spielberg Ranking
