the first half was a lot stronger; it allowed itself to be slow, creeping, and thus unsettling and stomach churning. the best moment was when lee opens that trunk and looks at that photo - the shock and horror of uncovering a memory that had likely been repressed for a reason pulled me into a brief and violet twist of nausea and horror.
the second half completely disregards any of the domestic horror of the first half! explaining everything with "the devil made them do it" is ridiculous, sorry. more could have been done in regards to how the nuclear family (his deliberate targets!!!) structure enables abuse - especially by the patriarch - and by doing thus, could have been far more compelling. this is where i thought the film was heading in the first half & i'm pretty disappointed. i would be more forgiving, but i cant really figure out how the devil explaination creates any sort of complexity or even commentary. ugh.
