Not too fond of Pixar's razor-sharp narratives anymore. They don't leave any time for you to process the heady subtext that the film is so full of.
I get that the target audience here is the kids, but the bigger kids also need to take hold of something really important at display here. I adored Turning Red. A film about a young girl going through puberty, couldn't have been told in a more beautiful manner.
The fact that they took the best approach of looking at it through two set of companions - (a) the mother and (b) the friends who serve as the two sides of the spectrum with the coming-of-age focus staying in the middle is a great choice.
I just wish, the film slowed down for its more essential moments like the one where the mother gets to know about her child's first period and is extremely supportive of it.
These moments would have really helped in making the adult generation watching this aware of the fact that there is nothing shameful about it.
Anyhow, Turning Red is a huge step forward for Disney. The cultural appropriation, representation, and the normalization of a lot of things make it a film that must be seen by every single person out there.
