“Tonight I walk with my brothers.”

I’m too sad to write a proper review but I will say that this is one of the finest displays of toxic masculinity and the generational trauma it causes. There’s a section in the middle that felt a little off to me (maybe the editing and pacing) but more than made up for it with the start and the absolutely phenomenal ending.

    Wow! That was disappointing.

I’d been looking forward to seeing this film since its release because Nicolas Cage + Lovecraftian horror sounds like a goddman dream come true. Unfortunately, it’s ‘meh’ at best. The acting from everyone is bad with a capital B for a lot of the runtime, the writing feels amateur, and the concept just isn’t taken far enough in my opinion which leads to a kinda boring mess, even when the climax hits and things get funky…

'We have the X-Men at home.' The X-Men we have at home:

While the story is in no way revolutionary, especially from the superhero genre, it’s not a terrible concept. Unfortunately the thing that murders this film and it’s potential is the dialogue and script. It all just feels so wooden and forced. It’s genuinely laughable at points.
The fact there are only 6 characters in the entire film and we have tragic backstories for our 5 'heroes' and yet…

    This movie absolutely rips.

I knew I’d love it because it’s a revenge movie but my god is it good. A genuinely fantastic performance from Dev Patel that keeps everything grounded even when he's stabbing dudes in the neck left, right and centre. And beyond all that cool stuff, there’s an equally cool story, and and even more equally cool political commentary that dives into the Indian caste system and religion of the country.
    If I had to complain I’d say…

Outrageously good as a pure cinematic experience. Even in a regular screening you could feel the floor vibrate at those explosions.

Takes everything great about the first one, visuals and tone, and improves on them while also adding more of a defined story and character arc for Paul.
While it took me a little bit to get fully into it (I don’t know, maybe I wasn’t in the right mood or whatever) I definitely see where all the praise is…
