Less a Rosetta-stone of references than a meditation on the often dark and uncomfortable places that art springs from. It's a series of primal scenes that provoke in young Spielberg not sexual excitement but the desire to capture, control and recast them on film. It's also a sensitively observed look at incompatibility in marriage, and the shifting loyalties children feel when that marriage comes apart at the seems.
This is something more complex than autohagiography, but then Speilberg's gift has always been to make what are deeply personal concerns feel almost universally accessible.
It's good, and you should see it in a theatre: there's more visual craft and imagination in what's essentially a simple family melodrama than in most modern "blockbusters."
