Judging from my intuition, this could've gone either way. MUBI's logline had me leery of any interwoven contrivances ("The lives of six German-Turkish immigrants are drawn together by circumstance"), but I'd also known it was bestowed with Cannes' Best Screenplay award. Again, it must be reiterated how this could've gone either way, having loved Akin's Head-On, though expressed indifference with In the Fade. (I haven't seen anything else by him. First of all, a sarcastic slang phrase for Joe Prestianni ("Sorry, not sorry"), who loves this film and recommended it to me, simply because he knows my affection for 1960's Italian social dramas runs deep. The mauling at Cannes is about right! An unintentionally hilarious fairytale if there ever was one. Part of me even hoped for otherwise as well. Grace of Monaco tries to suggest with a straight face that this post-Hollywood Grace Kelly saved the sovereignty of Monaco at a Red Cross ball. The snooty French immediately change their minds as does President Charles de Gaulle. It's a ludicrous notion that would've put the Grimaldi kids in a livid furor. After all, they…
