Slumdog Killionaire
Ok, so yeah, John Wick is cool and all, but has he ever laid siege to a high rise nightclub with a battalion of trans assassins and an arsenal of bottle rockets set against a symphony of heavy metal? Sure makes killing a dude with a pencil seem like a bunch of kiddie shit…
Really though, Dev Patel just has that DOG in him, man. Talk about an absolute balls-to-the-wall directorial debut; brutal violence, savage kills, frantic bloodshed, and a hell of a lot more emphasis on Indian social/cultural/political issues than I had been expecting. A little uneven, maybe, what with the first act (a straight-laced revenge thriller) and the third act (a no-laced revenge thriller) sandwiching an oddly silly second act that tends to drag a bit, but goddamn does this thing fire on all cylinders when it has too. That one police chase scene in particular is absolute heat—who could’ve expected something this nuts from a guy who’s the epitome of “skinny-ripped”? Feed me more, Dev, FEED ME MORE.
