Jack Nicholson's descent into furniture chewing madness is most entertaining and despite some opinions to the contrary I think Shelley Duvall's understated performance as his at first bewildered and later on flat out terrified wife is terrific. Even Danny Lloyd, who must only have been six years old when this was shot, is compelling.
But the real star of the show is of course Kubrick, his roaming camera and the way he builds an atmosphere of utter dread around the deserted corridors of the Overlook Hotel.
I watched the shorter and slightly breathless 113 minute international cut, but would have been quite happy having the extra half an hour or so that Kubrick removed from the original American release.
