Heather Santrous’s review published on Letterboxd:
I wanted to get this movie watched just because I talk movies with a guy I work with sometimes. We talked about Jackpot! last week and he mentioned he would probably watch it this weekend. Just to give us something to talk about, I decided I would watch it as well. The plot is pretty simple. In 2030 people and the government are desperate for money. A law is passed that allows people to kill the big lottery jackpot winner by sundown. If you are lucky enough to kill the winner, you get the money. The only rules are that guns can not be used and only the lottery winner can be killed by those who also entered the lottery. Enter Katie who is trying to get back into acting. She is down to the last of her money when she accidentally enters the lottery. Katie doesn't realize she has won so she doesn't understand why everyone is suddenly trying to kill her. She meets Noel who offers to protect her for a 10% fee. While Katie isn't sure if she can trust him, she does hire him. Now they just has to make it out of the city, which forfits the winnings, or survive.
If you are expecting something along the lines of The Purge, then you will likely be disappointed. That is what I thought of when I heard what this movie is about. While it kind of has that element to it, this story is nothing like The Purge. Jackpot! leans more into comedy with a healthy dose of action as well. Some scenes got me to laugh, but I didn't find this movie as funny as I thought it might be overall. The main characters are played by Awkwafina and John Cena so I would hope that would clue most people in that there will be some comedy.
I did enjoy the story. Noel seems to want to do the right thing and help Katie survive the day, but I kind of felt like his character was dumbed down at times. Noel seemed to have all the answers at first and then played more of a sidekick role later on. The action could be fun but a bit over-the-top at times I felt. People would go flying when it didn't make a lot of sense. Even so, there is plenty of action going on most of the time.
I had fun watching this movie even if I didn't find it to be great. There are plenty of cut lines running through the end credits to make those fun as well. I do wish they had left some of those in the movie though. Cena doing his best Schwarzenegger impression was funny, but then I always find that funny. From what I have read, this movie is becoming popular enough that a sequel might be in the works along with a franchise talk. I guess we will see if that happens. I see this one being worth a look if you haven't done so already so check it out when you can.
