Most of the times the entertainment that avoids being complicated tends to be very relaxed, leading to a rather lackluster and entirely forgettable experience.
Top Gun: Maverick falls into the category of pure entertainment, but it's one that makes the case of how to do it the right way.
The story may indeed appear simple; I'll give you that. However, its strength lies in the action sequences, the heart of the camaraderie among its characters and the tension and fun of its magnificent staging, and the film doesn't shy away from showcasing them abundantly.
Everything that happens with jets in this film is spectacular, particularly the breathtaking opening sequence featuring Maverick piloting that hypersonic plane.
Does it lean heavily on nostalgia? Absolutely, especially with that brief Val Kilmer appearance, but it never comes across as a gratuitous element in the storytelling. After all the movie establishes its status as a sequel, yet it's not entirely dependent on you having seen the original.
And even if you can question how necessary this sequel was after 36 years, the results prove its effectiveness within the blockbuster genre, reinforcing the importance of investing in films like this one.
Yes, it's a sequel and stars an ultra-famous name, but there's life for blockbusters outside of superheroes.
Of course, that remains to be seen at the box office. After all, even accounting for inflation, the original film had a budget of just over $30 million, while Top Gun: Maverick, not including marketing expenses, surpassed $150 million.
Though it may sound repetitive, for those who prefer streaming and don't really care about this, as Tom Cruise emphasized and ardently fought for, movies like this serve as a reminder of why the theatrical experience remains unmatched.
Don't hesitate; go see it and enjoy a great time.
