Needed something familiar after a long day, so here we are. Definitely a favorite from Kaurismäki's filmography--and frankly, between the naturalistic Old France stylization, brilliant performances from Wilms & Pellonpää (and Baudelaire!! 🐾), the Fuller/Malle/Léaud cameos, and the romantic-melancholic story more broadly, I'm afraid this is just an all-timer for me. Like I feel more than comfortable putting this in my favorites ever, and would honestly probably accept living in this film if given the opportunity, even if that would probably…

Maybe didn't hit quite as hard this time around as it did the first in my perhaps slightly overenthusiastic early cinephilia (lol 🙈), but by and large I still stand by this film. I find the eponymous 'Idiot' such a moving character, and Kurosawa's transposing of the whole plot to snowy Hokkaido is still so darn beautiful. Such a shame his full vision does not survive in the print we have today, but even for what remains to still be so brilliant/moving I think says something.

Look--I watch a lot of old movies. Very rarely do contemporary films really *wow* me, but this happened to be an oh so pleasant exception! Holy smokes!
A modern holiday classic in the truest sense, because aside from the cozy, festive and wintry vibes it's just a damn good and thoughtful film. Thematically, it reminded me of something between It's A Wonderful Life and Dead Poets Society, with maybe a touch of Wes Anderson sprinkled in.
    It was quite simply…
