I did not want to see this. The trailers looked terrible, and I’ve already had more than my fill of the Make Glen Powell a Star project. But sometimes you find yourself with a summer afternoon to kill, and well, there’s “Twisters” at basically every cineplex within a half hour radius and each with about a dozen different showtimes to choose from. That inevitability is compelling. So too is the fact that this was directed by Lee Isaac Chung who apparently really wanted to do this job—not just for the money but because he identifies with the Oklahoma milieu…? Anyway, after all of that, I’m here to say that this is one of those movies that you’d describe with the language “exceeds low expectations”. Extraordinarily low expectations. It’s thoroughly, almost pathologically devoid of any kind of surprises, but it’s also structured so solidly, so reliably, it’s practically a kitchen appliance of a movie—you’re not meant to think about it at all, and yet it will still deliver perfectly adequate drama toast each and every time. You get tons of tornado action, regular, effective infusions of adrenaline, and lots and lots of destruction porn. Even the groaniest parts, the “character-building stuff” and also the “acknowledgments of ethical implications” are all mercifully economical. All the beats are hit, all the action is ticked off, it’s all there. Except for any mention of the concept of climate change. Funny omission!
Saw it with the family at UGC Ciné Cité Les Halles, in salle 6, which is visually stunning.
