Watched it again and I have to admit, though it was still great it wasn’t as electrifying as the first viewing. The incredible tension of that first hour felt somewhat subdued this round, though I was able to appreciate more deeply the groundwork that Saulnier lays for the second half, which is still very potent. Maybe the reason is because the director is so meticulous, even principled, about moderating the action for plausibility and staving off any temptation to render it in cartoonish terms that it doesn’t deliver the repeatable bloodlust satisfaction that action movies often do. Given a little more time before my next viewing, it might be easier to appreciate this movie on its own merits. Check back in a year, maybe more.
