I watched this on my own the first time but I felt compelled to show it to the family before the 48-hour rental period expired, and they all were as shocked and ecstatic and entertained by it as I was. For me it was still a consistent pleasure on the second viewing, and while I can’t say that it fully earned its long runtime (my biggest complaint previously) this go-round, I did find that my appreciation for the craft—and comedy—was even deeper this time. The gags, the pacing, the setups and payoffs are all pretty intricately constructed and largely very successful.
However I also found that there’s a lot of stuff in this movie that I just didn’t get. Not that I’m expecting everything to be logical, but I sometimes just didn’t understand what was apparently supposed to be fairly rudimentary action logic throughout the film, even when it’s explained through supposedly simplistic but very fast diagrammatic shots. For instance, I can’t say for sure what the castor oil was for, or what the function of the poo was, or what the rocket ship was meant to do. That I didn’t comprehend these details didn’t detract from my enjoyment, obviously, but it feels like these misses held it back from being a full on masterpiece.
