Two lovely performances, one from the irresistible Kiercy Clemons, and the other from a surprisingly versatile Nick Offerman, almost lift this eager indie dramedy beyond its small ambitions. The two leads seem to want very much to be in a more sophisticated vehicle than this, and director Brett Haley seems to want to make it happen for them. But it’s all stifled by a disorderly set of plot threads that never quite come into focus, and a precious, peak Brooklyn aesthetic that makes the whole thing look like some kind of lifestyle commercial for a credit card. Still, there’s just enough heart and chemistry between the leads that I found myself willing to be more forgiving than I might otherwise have been. Didn’t hate it, in short.
