On second viewing this was faster moving, flowed together better, but also felt richer, more evident of its own character. Where “Fury Road” was practically one long, extended action sequence, “Furiosa” is almost like a collection of fables. There’s a line very early on about how the truth isn’t even knowable, and the open-endedness of the resolution provokes that idea even further. Did all of this happen? Did some of it? Any of it? It may not even matter here. Each of its chapters is like a different dream, maybe a living nightmare, of clawing your way back from loss in a world that has lost its moral compass. Some of them are hazy, dreamlike; others are chillingly clear and brutal. It’s a subtly but meaningfully different view of this universe from the structure of “Fury Road.” It will never escape that masterpiece’s shadow but it’s still a beautiful, stunning complement.
