I gotta believe that the original script for this blend of period melodrama and artsy noir must’ve seemed like a good idea at the outset, but the final product is a misshapen mess. Neither the melodrama nor the noir are executed with any noticeable élan, even if judged strictly as pro forma specimens of their respective genres. But the latter goes particularly off-the-rails with a third-act plot twist so roundly implausible that I’m not even sure any cast would have been able to navigate their way through it. Stars Thomasin Mackenzie and Ann Hathaway though, both so vibrant elsewhere, are utterly stranded here. Director William Oldroyd seems incapable of helping them make sense of the rapid succession of motivational left turns that are necessary to sell the sudden change in tone. To top it all off, Oldroyd has no real resolution for the questions he raises and concludes with a dangling plot thread that he hopes the audience mistakes for an artful coda.
