An hour and a half of consistently hilarious gags, each one a marvel of craft and comedic precision, but only nominally tied together as a narrative. And then, and then the final scene pulls a rabbit out of a top hat: a moment of such wonderful, exquisite tenderness and human understanding that feels as emotionally impactful as almost anything the cinema has ever produced. On top of it, Chaplin has the good taste to end that at its peak, fading to black exactly at the right second, lingering no longer than is absolutely necessary to let that joyous spectacle that he’s produced echo into the end title.
