Essentially a ninety-five minute exercise in forgiving oneself that very oddly resolves into a kind of confused condemnation of the solipsism of forgiving oneself. Or at least that’s how I read the final, somewhat unnecessary twist at the end, a decision which, to its credit, at least is willing to scramble what had been two prior acts of borderline predictable magical realism. I’m a bit fixated on that end because it really does call so much of what we saw before into question. Often that can be seen as bold storytelling but here I can’t be sure it’s not just an example of formal shallowness. The whole movie is executed with considerable elegance, of course, and also great emotional stylization; the preciousness is laid on beautifully but very thickly. Whatever the thesis at work here is, it’s not nearly as interesting as Andrew Scott’s mesmerizing performance, which delivers the devastating power that the script tries to do through trickery.
