I’ve finally gotten around to ‘The Illusionist,’ and I have to say, it’s a very good film. It’s impossible not to draw comparisons to ‘The Prestige,’ especially with how similar their endings are, even if they take different approaches. The fact that these two films were released just five months apart is honestly hilarious; Neil Burger and Christopher Nolan must’ve been looking over each other’s shoulders at some point. That said, ‘The Illusionist’ feels more focused on the mystical side of magic, as opposed to the mechanical sleight-of-hand tricks in ‘The Prestige.’

The plot follows Eisenheim, a magician whose illusions seem almost supernatural to his audiences. But at its heart, the film is a love story, with Eisenheim going up against a violent and power-hungry prince to be with his childhood sweetheart, played by Jessica Biel. When she vanishes, the story shifts into a game of deception, with Paul Giamatti’s police inspector caught in the middle, trying to piece together the truth. The story’s twists and turns kept me hooked, even though I did predict the ending. It was still so well executed that it didn’t feel cheap or obvious.

Edward Norton was excellent as Eisenheim, understated but magnetic, and Rufus Sewell made for a solid antagonist. Giamatti might’ve been the standout for me, though, balancing his character’s conflicted loyalty with a certain charm that made him so compelling to watch. The sound design, the choice of illusions, and the beautifully rendered settings all helped bring the story to life.

As much as I enjoyed this, it’s hard to directly compare it to ‘The Prestige.’ They’re both great in their own ways; this one leans into its romance and mysticism, while Nolan’s film thrives on its darker, more obsessive tones. I’d probably edge ‘The Prestige’ as it had more intensity; Jackman’s ferocity as the villain hit harder than a couple simply trying to escape the clutches of a scheming prince. Either way, ‘The Illusionist’ was a really solid watch, and it’s definitely worth your time! 4/5.

Saw ‘Kraven the Hunter’ a couple of hours ago, and honestly, I don’t get the hate. Maybe I was watching a different film because two of my mates called it boring, but I didn’t feel that way at all. The plot was decent overall, and it was great to finally see Kraven, one of Marvel’s most unique characters, on the big screen. Aaron Taylor-Johnson wasn’t a bad choice for the role either. It’s not his strongest performance, but he still brought enough intensity to make it work.

That said, the casting was hit-and-miss. Alessandro Nivola as Rhino was brilliant; just hilarious and perfectly suited to the tone they were going for. Russell Crowe as Nikolai, Kraven’s father was also pretty solid. His presence added some weight to the story. But then you’ve got Rhino’s assistant, in his ridiculous Sergio Tacchini tracksuit, and Calypso, who felt completely off. Their performances, just to name a few, felt flat and out of sync with the rest of the film, and honestly, it took me out of it at times.

The plot, while entertaining, was definitely disjointed. There were so many far-fetched moments that I just had to roll with it. It’s not better than ‘Venom,’ but it absolutely destroys ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web.’ If nothing else, it’s proof that Sony can sometimes deliver something watchable in their Spider-Man Universe.

As someone who’s a fan of the comics, though, I couldn’t ignore the glaring absence of Spider-Man. Kraven’s entire story in the comics revolves around his obsession with taking down Spider-Man as the ultimate prey. Without that dynamic, the film felt hollow and disconnected, like it was missing a key piece of the puzzle. It’s hard not to see it as a missed opportunity to fully explore such a morally complex character.

Flaws aside, I still found it enjoyable in parts, even if it didn’t fully hit the mark. I’d say it’s worth a watch, just don’t expect it to be peak cinema. 3/5.

Watched ‘65’ this morning, and honestly, it was just decent. Adam Driver was solid, though far from his best, but he still managed to carry it. The story itself is fine, nothing overly complex or intricate; spaceship crashes on a strange planet, and it’s all pretty straightforward from there. The pacing felt a bit rushed, and there wasn’t much depth to dig into, but it did what it set out to do.

The dinosaurs were okay, though they had a bit of a ‘Jurassic Park’ vibe with a few noticeable tweaks here and there. Overall, it’s not a terrible film by any stretch; something easy to throw on in the background while you’re doing other things. You won’t miss much, and you won’t need to overthink it either. Nothing groundbreaking, but it’s serviceable. 2.5/5.

I’ve seen some people call ‘Before I Go to Sleep’ a “poor man’s Memento,” which I couldn’t help but laugh at, but honestly, I’m not entirely on that bandwagon. I know I might be in the minority here, but I really enjoyed this film. It follows the story of a woman who wakes up every day unable to remember her life, the result of a traumatic accident in her past. As she starts piecing things together, terrifying truths emerge, forcing her to question everyone around her.

Sure, there are a few plot holes; like the whole sleeping angle, where Kidman would forget everything. Could she not just stay up all night and skip the reset entirely? But despite that, the story absolutely gripped me. The twist at the end, and how everything finally clicks into place, was so well done. It’s a film that I feel deserves way more credit than it gets, and I’ll definitely be revisiting it down the line.

Firth, Kidman, and Mark Strong were all brilliant in their roles. I’ve seen some criticism aimed at Kidman, but I don’t get it! People really need to ease up. Firth, in particular, was impressive, showing a range I haven’t seen much from him before (and without giving anything away, it’s such a shift from what I expected of him). If you’re into films like Nolan’s ‘Memento,’ I’d say give this one a shot. It keeps you guessing the entire time, and it really doesn’t let up. Definitely recommended! 4/5.

‘Midsommar’ is definitely a disturbing film, no doubt about that. At this point, I’ve decided Ari Aster just doesn’t do it for me. His films seem to follow the same formula: brutal cult horrors with gruesome, unresolved endings. I’m probably being a bit harsh here, because it’s a solid film, but I feel like it had the potential to go deeper into the grim rituals and maybe even let Dani and Christian find a way to flee. Instead, it went with another depressing, villain-wins ending that left me unsatisfied.

Mark’s fate especially annoyed me. I mean, Will Poulter was hilarious throughout, so to see him go out the way he did was frustrating. Florence Pugh, on the other hand, was incredible; she gave the film a lot of its emotional weight, and she made Dani’s breakdowns genuinely hard to watch. In terms of praise, I have to admit the visuals were something else. The camerawork was hypnotic, almost dreamlike, and it perfectly captured the hallucinatory feel of the story.

It’s not a film that relies on jump scares at all. Instead, the horror creeps in through the slow descent from euphoria into chaos. You start off almost mesmerised by the idyllic setting, but it all unravels into something deeply unsettling. It’s definitely worth a watch, but I just can’t get past Aster’s endings. This just felt uncanny to ‘Hereditary’; bleak, unresolved, and full of misery. Folk horror just isn’t my thing, especially when there are no winners in sight. Still, putting my minor frustrations aside, credit where it’s due. 4/5.

I know I’m probably on my own with this, but this was genuinely my first time properly watching ‘Elf.’ I’d never gone for it before because my Christmas film rotation usually sticks to ‘Home Alone,’ ‘Love Actually,’ and ‘Nativity!’, the ones I always make time for. Honestly though, I think ‘Elf’ is heavily overrated. Sure, a few parts made me laugh, but it just didn’t pull me in the way I hoped.

I’ve never been a big Will Ferrell fan, to be honest. His style of comedy just isn’t for me, and I didn’t find him hilariously funny here either. I also thought parts of the plot leaned a bit too childish for my liking. I wasn’t expecting it to be super serious, but I guess I thought it might have a bit more depth. It’s weird because I laugh at just about anything, so I don’t think I need to lighten up; this one just didn’t click with me. I’ll probably stick with my usual Christmas favourites from now on. ‘Surviving Christmas’ still holds up as a surprisingly funny watch, even on a rewatch. It’s more of a rom-com than a proper Christmas movie, but it managed to make me laugh again, and it’s not overly long, which I appreciated.
Honestly, I think both the critics and film buffs on Letterboxd have missed the mark on this one; it’s much better than they make it out to be.

Ben Affleck impressed me with his comedic timing. He really sells the character and makes it believable, but James Gandolfini absolutely steals the show. He was hilarious, and his scenes had me laughing the most. Watching him in this made me even more determined to start ‘The Sopranos’ over Christmas; it’s long overdue.

The writing is sharp, and the jokes land well, even if it doesn’t exactly scream “Christmas classic.” It’s a solid, lighthearted movie that’s easy to enjoy. Definitely a hidden gem in the holiday rom-com category! 3/5.

‘Christmas with the Kranks’ is a decent enough Christmas film, but nothing I’d go out of my way to watch again. The premise of skipping Christmas for a trip is laughable to me; Christmas is such a big part of the year, so the whole idea felt a bit off. That said, the ending ties things up well enough.

What really got under my skin was the neighborhood’s over-the-top obsession with the Kranks’ decision not to celebrate. As much as I didn’t agree with the Kranks, the neighbours’ controlling behavior was frustrating and honestly just weird. The constant badgering got old fast.

It’s watchable, but that’s about it. The jokes didn’t really land for me, and while it’s not the worst Christmas film out there, it’s definitely far from the best. Just okay, nothing more. 2.5/5.

‘Withnail and I’ is a film I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. The script brims with sharp humour, vile insults, cutting sarcasm, and some of the most unforgettable lines I’ve come across in film! It’s a comedy that’s completely unique, and I can’t think of many others that come close. Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann delivering this razor-sharp dialogue is what makes ‘Withnail and I’ so fcking good! I’ve hardly seen Grant in anything else, but he’s utterly brilliant here. Withnail is such a standout character, and Grant’s performance is easily one of the funniest I’ve ever seen.

This film might just be the most quotable in cinema, I swear. The lines are iconic, but it’s also the way they’re delivered that had me laughing so much. The late Richard Griffiths deserves some credit too; he was excellent as Uncle Monty, adding his own chaotic energy to the film.

The comedy is what makes this film such a standout for me. There are so many brilliant moments that I couldn’t stop laughing at. The police officer screaming, “Get in the back of the van!” at Withnail was hilarious because of the sheer absurdity of his tone. And the ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ scene with Presuming Ed in the bath, Marwood panicking out of his mind on drugs, Danny’s bizarre yet hilarious dialogue in the background, Withnail completely zoned out, and Ed spinning that globe muttering random nonsense; it’s all just perfectly ridiculous.

The last 25 minutes had me pissing myself, thanks to the moments I mentioned above! The chaotic energy builds so well, and the characters just become more unhinged in the best way possible. Honestly, this is one of those rare films that feels like pure entertainment from start to finish. It’s an absolute comedy gem, and I can’t imagine anyone doing it better than this cast. It seems to be an unknown film for the vast majority on Letterboxd but it’s golden 🤣. 4.5/5.

‘Lost Highway’ is one hell of a film! It’s every bit the brainfuck of an experience you’d expect from Lynch, and I couldn’t help noticing how uncanny it feels alongside ‘Mulholland Drive.’ He’s absolutely brilliant, but there’s no denying he’s got one of the most uniquely twisted minds in filmmaking. How Lynch comes up with this shit is an absolute mystery to me 🤣.

The film itself is drenched in mystery from start to finish. It’s one of those stories that invites you to piece it together, even if it’s intentionally fragmented and surreal. I did some digging after watching it and found an interpretation that really clicked with me: the idea that Fred’s reality collapses under the weight of his guilt, creating a warped psychological escape that ultimately crumbles as well. The mix of dream logic, repression, and guilt is handled in such a visceral way that it sticks with you. Lynch seems to have a knack for delving into human psychology, and here he explores the darker corners of denial and consequence in a way that’s as fascinating as it is unsettling.

I also couldn’t ignore the eerie presence of Robert Blake as the mystery man. Knowing the real-life context of his crimes only adds another layer of unease, making his performance even creepier than it already is. The casting across the board is spot-on, though. Patricia Arquette and Bill Pullman are phenomenal, and the whole cast feels like they’re pulled straight out of a nightmare.

What really got me was how much this film leans into the dreamlike structure without completely losing itself. It’s less obtuse than ‘Mulholland Drive,’ but still demands your full attention to grasp its layers. For me, it’s one of the best explorations of dream psychology I’ve seen; Lynch captures how people construct fantasies to escape reality, only for those fantasies to betray them in the end.

I’d probably still edge ‘Mulholland Drive’ over this one, but there’s no doubt ‘Lost Highway’ is a masterpiece in its own right. It’s dark, complex, and one of those films that lingers in your mind long after it’s over. 4.5/5.

I found ‘Rivals’ to be one of the most refreshing dramas I’ve seen in a while. The writing is sharp, and the cast is absolutely spot on. David Tennant is brilliant as always, nailing the role of a complex antagonist with a presence that kept me glued to the screen. Aidan Turner as Declan is fantastic too; he brings a lot of depth to the character, and Alex Hassell as Rupert was just as strong, making the dynamic between the two feel electric. Danny Dyer as Freddie added a great edge to the series, and you could tell the entire cast was having a great time working together, which made it even more enjoyable to watch. I definitely need to give the books a read in the future!

What I loved most about ‘Rivals’ was its ability to blend humour and drama seamlessly. It starts off lighter and more comedic but gets heavier and more intense as the story unfolds, which kept me hooked. It feels like a period piece with layers; a little soap opera, a little satire, and just the right amount of chaos. It doesn’t try too hard to push any modern agendas, and instead, it focuses on the messy, flawed humanity of its characters.

Every episode felt purposeful, building up to a finale that really paid off. What a crazy fcking ending! It’s just a cleverly written show, and it left me wanting more. Bella Maclean is definitely a rising star, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her career take off after this. I’m absolutely hoping for a season two; it’s one of the rare shows this year that really stands out. Next up, ‘The Day of the Jackal!’ 4.5/5.

‘Conclave’ was a pretty solid watch and one I enjoyed more than I expected. Fiennes and Tucci both delivered standout performances; Fiennes, in particular, was incredible in every scene, commanding the screen with his presence. The cinematography deserves a special mention too; it’s brilliantly atmospheric, with Berger crafting some stunning visuals that give the film a real sense of depth and grandeur. I wouldn’t be surprised if it nabs a ton of Oscar nods for its cinematography and acting, and Fiennes could easily take home a win.

The script, while sparse and well-written for the most part, occasionally veered a bit too on-the-nose in key exchanges. I found myself wishing it had leaned more into subtlety, especially during the silences that begged for more nuance. Still, the story keeps you hooked with its “who done it” framework, and the final twist completely caught me off guard.

What I appreciated most, though, was how the film avoided being a faith-based narrative. It’s not about preaching or promoting belief but instead dives into the politics of religion and the power dynamics within the Vatican. Even for non-Catholics, it’s fascinating to get a glimpse into how this ancient hierarchy selects its leader. It’s entertaining, thought-provoking, and beautifully crafted; a strong contender for film of the year, even if it’s not my personal top pick. 4/5.

From the outset, this felt like a nice, almost comforting film; a father and daughter making ends meet on a holiday together, complete with little nostalgic touches like the mini camcorder. But as the story unfolded, it hit pretty deep like a ton of bricks. That final scene was absolutely devastating. The imagery and foreshadowing throughout; the balcony, the nighttime swim, the broken arm with no explanation, and nearly being hit by a bus, painted a clear, heartbreaking picture of Calum’s internal struggles. That ‘Under Pressure’ scene when they’re dancing, paired with Bowie’s haunting lyrics, just cut right through me. You can see the cracks in Calum’s façade and what’s likely to come after their trip, and it’s absolutely gut-wrenching. Paul Mescal captures Calum’s quiet struggles with such raw authenticity. You can feel every unspoken emotion and see the weight he’s carrying, making his performance both subtle and incredibly powerful.

The film captures such an intimate and personal portrayal of a father-daughter relationship, but what’s most striking is how it’s seen through Sophie’s perspective; both as a child and, in retrospect, as an adult. The setting of the fading, slightly grimy holiday resort felt so familiar, and it grounded the film in a way that made everything hit even harder. The weight of Calum’s inevitable disappearance really stuck with me, and I couldn’t help but feel for the adult Sophie. Even though we barely see her, the weight of her frustration and sadness over her fleeting memories of her dad is palpable.

Everything about ‘Aftersun’ felt real; uncomfortably so at times. The performances were incredibly natural, and the cinematography and sound design were stunning, with every little detail enhancing the emotion. It’s a film that asks a lot of the viewer, with so much left between the lines, but it’s worth every second. Sad, beautiful, and unforgettable. ‘Aftersun’ is an absolute gem. 5/5.

Overall, ‘The Lovely Bones’ left me feeling pretty dejected. While there were some undeniably strong performances, the plot just didn’t hold up for me. I think I went in expecting something more along the lines of ‘Prisoners,’ a film where justice is served in a way that feels satisfying, but ‘The Lovely Bones’ didn’t deliver on that front. Sure, George Harvey’s fate was eventually sealed, but it didn’t feel earned or fitting.

The whole premise of Susie narrating from heaven didn’t work for me at all. I found it backward and honestly quite boring. Every scene in the afterlife dragged, and I couldn’t shake how much it pulled me out of the more grounded, gripping parts of the story. Peter Jackson is a phenomenal director, but this just wasn’t it for me. It had so much potential, especially in the first 30-40 minutes. That opening stretch was well-written and genuinely unsettling, with a sickeningly compelling performance from Stanley Tucci. As twisted and horrifying as his character was, he played the role so effectively that I couldn’t look away.

Mark Wahlberg also gave a solid performance, and Saoirse Ronan was brilliant in her role. I think the investment in her character made the lack of proper justice for her death all the more frustrating. The emotional weight was there, but the story didn’t give the resolution I needed. It’s one of those films that keeps you uncomfortable, and while that can be effective, it didn’t balance that discomfort with the intrigue I’d hoped for.

Ultimately, ‘The Lovely Bones’ was a solid idea on paper, but most of the execution fell flat for me. The few standout performances, Tucci especially, are the only parts I can really recommend. Otherwise, it just didn’t cut it. 3/5.

Another late review, but ‘Champions’ was a really nice watch; one of those heartwarming films that leaves you smiling long after it’s over. I’d say it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen about people with special needs. The writing stands out, especially the dialogue, which is full of funny and witty one-liners that had me laughing more than I expected.

Woody Harrelson absolutely shines in his role. He has this natural charm and ease on screen, and it’s no surprise he nailed it here. The story itself is, of course, fairly predictable; an inspirational tale of unexpected triumph, but that doesn’t take away from how enjoyable it is. The disabled cast members truly stole the show, though. Seeing them given such a huge opportunity and absolutely smashing it was just great. They did an excellent job showcasing how diverse the participants were, proving that talent and heart come in all shapes and sizes.

Craig, the lad addicted to sex, had me creasing whenever he spoke; just hilarious. Johnny and Cosentino were also fantastic and brought so much personality to their roles. Madison Tevlin, Kevin Iannucci, Joshua Felder, and the other cast members all deserve their praises for how naturally they handled their performances. You could tell they were having a great time, and it made the whole thing even more enjoyable to watch.

The movie isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s heartfelt, funny, and inspiring. A solid feel-good film that doesn’t overdo it on the sentimentality and gives everyone involved their time to shine. 3.5/5.

A late review, as I caught this in the cinema last night, but ‘Heretic’ left a lasting impression. It’s a strange and clever film with a plot unlike anything I’ve seen before. The story hooked me from the start, and while there are a few small plot holes, the way it unfolds feels both gripping and completely unorthodox. At its core, this isn’t really a horror movie, despite the dark hallways, eerie noises, and sinister basements. Those elements feel more symbolic, maybe pointing to deeper ideas about religion and faith that I’m still chewing over. Even so, the tension those aesthetics create is palpable.

The heart of the movie is this twisted cat-and-mouse game between two young girls and a diabolical older man. The premise; that they might earn their freedom if they can unravel the argument of his thesis, is absurdly tense yet weirdly intriguing. And Hugh Grant in the villain role! Absolute masterstroke. His sly grin, impeccable comedic timing, and the way he switches between menace and humor is just class. Watching him sing ‘Creep’ by Radiohead had me in bits; it’s so twisted but works so well.

While I didn’t find the theological debates particularly mind-blowing, they’re still cool in their own way, and the unique approach to organized religion kept me intrigued. The final exam scene, though! An absolute killer. It ties everything together in a way that left me genuinely impressed. Performances are top-notch across the board, and Grant is in a league of his own here.

Wicked, 2024 - ★★★★½ https://letterboxd.com/joeelsey14/film/wicked-2024/ letterboxd-review-721502789 Sat, 23 Nov 2024 13:56:54 +1300 2024-11-22 No Wicked 2024 4.5 402431 <![CDATA[

What a film! I’ve always had a soft spot for ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ practically growing up on it, so I knew ‘Wicked’ was going to be right up my street.
Having seen the stage show with the missus at the start of the month, and once before in the past, I was already familiar with the story, and I think the film absolutely did it justice. It captures the magic of the theatre production while standing strong as its own cinematic experience.

The casting was also spot-on! Ariana Grande as Glinda was perfection; her satire hit every mark, and Cynthia Erivo brought such heart and depth to Elphaba. Both absolutely nailed the vocals, with Grande and Erivo’s chemistry shining in every scene they shared. Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible was solid, Jeff Goldblum made a wonderfully quirky Wizard, and I have to give credit where it’s due to Jon M. Chu; he really brought out the best in his actors. Jonathan Bailey was brilliant as Fiyero, even if the reactions to his scenes had me losing my shit inside 🤣. Nothing ruins a film faster than people talking through it, so cheers Jonathan 🤣.

Visually, the film is stunning. From the vibrant costumes to the beautifully crafted sets, every frame felt lush and alive. Jon M. Chu’s direction brought a sensitivity and flair that captured the spirit of the musical without feeling like it was just copying it. There are plenty of nods to the original stage production, with little Easter eggs scattered throughout to keep long-time fans happy, but it’s also accessible and fresh for anyone new to ‘Wicked.’

The highlight of the film for me was the ending with ‘Defying Gravity.’ It was such a powerful scene, with Erivo, Grande and the rest of the cast absolutely smashing it! It’s exactly how you close a film like this. I won’t overhype it, but I thought it was pretty sublime in how it adapted the theatre show. The only downside for me was the length, but honestly, for a story like this, it’s necessary, and part two is definitely something I’m looking forward to. All in all, a strong, emotional, and visually dazzling take on a beloved musical. 4.5/5.

The Prince of Egypt, 1998 - ★★★½ https://letterboxd.com/joeelsey14/film/the-prince-of-egypt/ letterboxd-review-720154097 Thu, 21 Nov 2024 13:02:25 +1300 2024-11-20 No The Prince of Egypt 1998 3.5 9837 <![CDATA[

‘The Prince of Egypt’ is definitely a cool and modern take on the Exodus story, even if I wouldn’t rank it above some of the heavy hitters from Pixar or DreamWorks. That said, I completely understand why it’s rated so highly; it’s a beautifully crafted film that stands out as a unique and creative religious adaptation.

What a cast, by the way. As soon as it started, I recognized Ralph Fiennes and Val Kilmer’s voices, then found out Sandra Bullock and Michelle Pfeiffer were in it too. Absolutely stacked. The story of Moses is told in such a compelling way, managing to make the narrative personable, engaging, and fun while staying true to its original message. The relationships, especially between Moses and Rameses, felt incredibly real, adding an emotional depth I didn’t expect.

Artistically, this film is stunning. The moment where the Red Sea parts is very impressive; those visuals could genuinely be framed and hung on a wall. There’s so much symbolism and creativity in how the story is depicted. The music, while not particularly memorable, worked well in the background, complementing the film rather than taking the spotlight, which I actually liked.

Overall, ‘The Prince of Egypt’ does stand out among religious adaptations. Some moments felt genius and surprisingly beautiful, even if parts of the storytelling could have been a little more captivating. It’s definitely worth a watch, and I can see why it’s held in such high regard. 3.5/5.

Trainspotting, 1996 - ★★★★★ https://letterboxd.com/joeelsey14/film/trainspotting/ letterboxd-review-719530095 Wed, 20 Nov 2024 15:06:23 +1300 2024-11-20 No Trainspotting 1996 5.0 627 <![CDATA[

Watching ‘Trainspotting’ felt like diving into a Scottish version of ‘Requiem for a Dream,’ and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to finally see it. This is such a powerful piece of cinema that I honestly think every teenager should watch. It’s a harrowing, unflinching look at the culture of drugs and addiction, showing people at their absolute lowest. Despite the heavy subject matter, it’s artistic, darkly clever, and incredibly fast-paced, with a solid script that never lets up.

The film’s relentless depiction of addiction is balanced by sharp narration from Renton, Ewan McGregor’s character, which ties the story together and injects moments of dark humour into the bleakness. McGregor is masterful in the role, perfectly capturing the desperation and self-awareness of someone caught in the spiral. Robert Carlyle as Begbie is equally brilliant; his unhinged, terrifying energy is unforgettable. Every performance feels authentic, making the characters feel so painfully real.

Danny Boyle’s direction is what truly makes this film stand out. His stylish, high-energy approach creates an expertly crafted adrenaline rush from start to finish. The visuals, the pacing, and even the surreal moments work together to pull you into this chaotic world. It’s a film that’s as disturbing as it is captivating.

For me, ‘Trainspotting’ is a masterpiece of its genre; raw, unfiltered, and brutally honest. It doesn’t glorify, it doesn’t hold back, and it sticks with you long after the credits roll. A fantastic piece of filmmaking that’s both thought-provoking and unforgettable. 5/5.

‘Moneyball’ is such a feel-good film, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The way they captured the Oakland A’s 20-game win streak, with Hatteberg stepping up in the clutch, was just brilliant to watch. It’s one of those underdog stories; a classic David vs. Goliath tale, but what makes it stand out is its focus on what happens off the field. The clash between old-school tradition and a new, data-driven approach to the game gave it a fresh angle that I found fascinating.

Brad Pitt gives a stellar performance as Billy Beane, showing the struggles and determination of a man trying to change the system. Jonah Hill was equally fantastic, bringing depth to his role while still adding his signature charm. And seeing a young Chris Pratt in such a pivotal role was a treat. Of course, Phillip Seymour Hoffman was incredible as always, bringing weight and authenticity to his part; rest in peace to one of the greats. The cast really elevated the story and made it all the more engaging.

What I loved most was the behind-the-scenes look at how a professional team operates. It’s not just about the players on the field; it’s about the negotiations, the scouting, and the risk-taking that go into building a team. Even though the A’s didn’t win the World Series, they embodied the true spirit of winners and gained the respect of everyone in the sport.

This isn’t just another sports film; it’s a story about vision, resilience, and the courage to defy tradition. ‘Moneyball’ goes beyond the game, delving into the risks and sacrifices it takes to challenge a system and redefine success. It’s not about winning it all but about leaving a lasting impact, and the Oakland A’s did just that. A brilliant film that’s both inspiring and entertaining, it’s one I’d recommend to anyone, baseball fan or not. 4/5.

Kudos to Anna Kendrick for one hell of a directorial debut with ‘Woman of the Hour.’ She did an incredible job showcasing just how twisted Rodney Alcala truly was. The film left me feeling genuinely disturbed, beyond disgusted, which is a testament to how well the story was told. I do think the movie could have benefited from being longer to dive deeper into the history of events, as there was so much more to explore. That said, for her first time directing, I couldn’t find any major flaws. It definitely deserves the high ratings it’s getting.

Daniel Zovatto’s performance was phenomenal and deserves serious praise. He managed to embody the character with chilling precision, capturing all the subtleties of a disturbed mind while still maintaining an unsettling charm. The depth in his stare was enough to give me goosebumps. I just hope people don’t make the mistake of judging the actor based on the role, like what happened with Evan Peters after Dahmer. It’s all part of the craft, and Zovatto truly delivered.

What I appreciated was that the film stayed non-exploitative. It didn’t rely on gore, yet it had moments so tense they were hard to sit through, even for those who already know the story. The car park scene especially stood out to me; it was a masterclass in building terror without needing explicit visuals. The fear factor was high, but it was all in the subtle, psychological details.

As stated, the pacing did slow down at times, and it would have been interesting to see more about Alcala’s backstory. However, this is still a solid addition to the lineup of serial killer films, offering something that doesn’t glorify but rather brings awareness. Kendrick has shown immense talent both in front of and behind the camera, and I can’t wait to see more of her work. This one’s a must-add to the watch list; pretty gripping from start to finish. 4/5.

What a belter of a film ‘Twin Town’ is. There’s nothing quite like watching a film set in your own city, with scenes filmed just minutes from my house. No better place in the world than good old Swans 🦢. The whole thing had me in a belly of laughs, especially since the characters speak in my dialect to a tee. It surprised me how dark the plot got, but it managed to stay hilarious all the way through; exactly what you’d want from a comedy. It’s probably more of a bloke’s film, but honestly, it’s a good time for anyone who appreciates its humour.

The story itself is brilliant and so authentically Welsh. Every minor detail adds to the experience, making it feel like a slice of local life spun into a madcap tale. It plays out like a serious drama at times but then suddenly hits you with comedy that feels effortless. Beyond the main plot, it’s the quirks of each character and the nods to Welsh culture that kept me laughing throughout.
What really stood out to me was the cinematography. This isn’t just a well-written movie; it’s beautifully filmed and uses a wide range of interesting shots that keep things visually engaging. It’s impressive how the camera work adds an artistic touch without feeling overdone.

The cast was spot-on, with Rhys Ifans and Dougray Scott bringing their A-game. Every character was portrayed perfectly, and not a single performance felt out of place or weak. That’s rare, and it makes the film that much more enjoyable. The music deserves a mention too; it’s a strong part of the film and stands up well on its own. It complements the scenes in a way that amplifies the energy without distracting from it. Overall, Twin Town isn’t too long, and it’s an absolute blast from start to finish! 4/5.

‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ was such a blast to watch. It’s not the kind of film that’ll change your life, but it’s great fun and exactly what I wanted. Seeing the meme of Cage and Pascal in the car on LSD come to life on screen was hilarious; their expressions had me in bits. Both of them are such top-tier actors, and their chemistry in this film is unbeatable. The plot itself was a real treat too; there were moments when I couldn’t tell if what I was watching was meant to be real or fiction, but that’s part of what made it so enjoyable. The ending, I felt, tied everything together perfectly.

Watching Cage interact with his inner Cage was hilarious and added a layer of absurdity that felt so fitting. Honestly, there isn’t another actor today who could pull off a film like this quite like Nicolas Cage. His career is a rollercoaster of unforgettable performances, the good, the bad, and everything in between, with so many of his films becoming cult classics. It made this meta-comedy the perfect homage to the man himself and all the wild, iconic roles he’s taken on over the years.

Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten crafted a screenplay that was clever as hell, filled with references that true Cage fans will appreciate without it ever feeling forced or like a gimmick. That’s no small feat for a movie that’s this self-aware. Watching Cage lean into all the nods to his own career had me grinning the whole way through. Pascal has really cemented himself as such a likable actor, and his presence in this film perfectly matches Cage’s energy. Their dynamic is what makes the movie sing, from the action scenes to their bizarre conversations.

I’m also all for the ‘Paddington 2’ praises scattered throughout too 🤣; it’s a belter of a film. Might even stick it on this afternoon, honestly. Regardless, if you’re looking for a film that’s equal parts absurd and entertaining, ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is the one.’ It’s an absolute riot from start to finish and delivers a wild, joyful celebration of all things Nicolas Cage. 4/5.

Pretty late review, but I had to share my thoughts after watching ‘Gladiator II’ Friday night in 4DX. Realistically, we all knew it wasn’t going to top the original ‘Gladiator,’ but it was still fcking brilliant. I really don’t get how people didn’t enjoy it. The plot was modern, enticing, and powerful, and it kept me engaged the entire time. Paul Mescal was fantastic as Lucius; he really brought the character to life in a way I wasn’t expecting. The tyrannical twins, played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger, were also brilliant and brought a sense of menace to the film. And of course, Pedro Pascal was as solid as ever. The casting was on point all around. It was also amazing to see Connie Nielsen reprise her role as Lucilla, adding that familiar depth to the story. And Denzel 👏, he was such a powerful presence, completely nailing his role.

Now, the visuals and technical aspects of the film were nothing short of brilliance. The fight sequences were extraordinary, especially with the animal animatronics. Seeing animals like monkeys and rhinoceroses in battle was such a game-changer. They looked incredibly real, making the scenes even more intense and unforgettable. The costumes, art direction, and cinematography captured the grandeur of the Roman Empire perfectly. The attention to detail in recreating the arenas and cityscapes was mind-blowing. Every frame screamed Ridley Scott’s mastery in filmmaking.

That said, while the visuals and action were spot on, the movie did feel like a typical gladiator film. There weren’t any major changes or new elements that would have made it stand out more from the first movie. The story played it safe, sticking closely to the ‘Gladiator’ formula. While Mescal and Denzel were great, they didn’t quite reach the legendary heights of Russell Crowe’s Maximus or Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus. I think a stronger antagonist or more intense confrontations would have ramped up the tension and added that extra layer of depth.

Still, I really enjoyed the film. I just wish “Now We Are Free” had been used more; it’s one of the best parts of the first movie, and the score in this one wasn’t quite as strong. However, the last minute of the film 🤩. Pure magic. Overall, I’d heavily recommend it! Definitely worth the watch, especially in 4DX if possible! 4.5/5.

‘The Penguin’ is genuinely fcking incredible. Watching it across just two days felt like the perfect way to take in such a gripping story, and it made the whole experience that much more intense. The way Lauren LeFranc approached crafting this villain origin story was nothing short of genius! Every plot twist, every carefully paced moment felt meticulously designed to keep viewers hooked. Oz’s backstory also! Simply sublime writing. I’m not sure if it’s entirely comic-accurate, but I honestly didn’t care because it was so well done. The writing dug deep, showcasing layers that made his transformation fascinating to watch.

Colin Farrell’s performance deserves nothing less than an Emmy. His portrayal brought this complex character to life with such depth, it left me floored. Cristin Milioti, too, delivered in every scene she was in! Absolutely phenomenal. These two made each episode unforgettable, pulling out performances that elevated the entire series. The cameos in the next ‘Batman’ film are genuinely gonna blow people away. With the way these characters were built up, every surprise appearance lands perfectly and adds to the anticipation.

DC’s darker, more grounded tone, seen through Batman, Joker, and now the Riddler, feels so right and gives this universe a gritty realism that’s hard to find elsewhere. This shift makes every story more compelling and enjoyable to watch as it unfolds. The moody visuals of Gotham, combined with the impeccable cinematography, enhance this tone, adding depth and elevating the storytelling. It’s top-notch, first-rate work that complements the narrative and immerses you in the world even further.

The ending left me with a storm of emotions: anger, excitement, and above all, a burning curiosity for what’s coming in ‘The Batman 2.’ I just can’t wait for it. The show has that rare kind of allure that keeps you gripped from start to finish. To me, ‘The Penguin’ isn’t just a standout series of the year; it’s one of the best shows currently out. This series genuinely reached a level of storytelling and world-building I wouldn’t have thought possible for DC a few years back. ‘The Penguin’ is an undeniable masterpiece, with everything from its plot to its setting and characters hitting the mark. It’s easily my favourite series of the 2020s so far! 5/5.

I’m not going to lie, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ left me really disappointed. I had high hopes going into it, especially with how powerful the first film was. I thought maybe the negative reviews were overblown, but turns out they were spot on. Honestly, I’m just glad I didn’t pay to see it 🤣. At first, I was trying to be generous, thinking it might land around a 3 or 3.5 rating, but those last 15 minutes completely ruined any goodwill I had left. The way Arthur could’ve saved himself and then Harley; it was so frustrating to watch, and the ending was just terrible. It felt like such a waste.

What made the first ‘Joker’ brilliant for me was its raw, intense portrayal of mental illness and the brutal look at societal failures. This sequel just tossed all that out for a chaotic mess. I couldn’t believe the tonal shift. Instead of the gritty realism that made the original stand out, this one went off the rails with random musical numbers. I couldn’t wrap my head around why they would do that; it felt like they were trying way too hard to be ‘artsy’ without any real substance. The dark, psychological edge that defines the Joker was lost, and I found myself checking out as the movie progressed. It just didn’t feel like a Joker film at all, more like an attempt at something avant-garde that missed the mark.

By the end, I just felt irritated and confused. The whole thing came off just so disjointed and pretentious. If you haven’t seen the original ‘Joker,’ make sure you do! It’s absolutely brilliant.
But this sequel? Nah, skip it 🤣. 2/5.

I’d say I enjoyed ‘Never Let Go’ for what it was; I’ve seen plenty worse, but I’ve definitely seen better. The film didn’t drag too much, and at times the plot actually kept me interested. I still can’t get over how early Berry’s fate came; it felt too sudden and almost ridiculous, to be honest. The ending left me feeling more frustrated than anything, with questions left hanging, like the stranger and his daughter. Were they even real? So many plot holes that make sense as to why it gets so much criticism.

Anthony B. Jenkins and Percy Daggs IV really stood out for me and even outshone Berry at points. They were genuinely impressive. For me, the film seemed to be about generational trauma, the way it’s passed down and how some fight to break out while others embrace it. The evil felt like a metaphor for the darkness we carry, and I think it was implied that every character had it lurking inside; they just had to accept it. The mother came off as the connection between generations, Samuel as someone who failed to escape, and Nolan as the hope, the one who sacrifices and loses everything in the process.

Overall, it was decent, a film full of ambiguity that definitely makes you think and piece things together on your own. 3/5.

After watching ‘The Wild Robot,’ I can kinda see why there was so much hype around it. I went into it mostly out of curiosity, wanting to know what everyone was raving about. I’d say it was a pretty good animated film. I’ve definitely seen stronger efforts from DreamWorks, but this wasn’t bad at all. The film’s visual style struck me right away. The animation felt like a living painting, mixing the beauty of nature with the mechanical, sharp edges of technology. I found myself really taken in by how stunning each frame looked; it reminded me of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ in that sense.

The way the animation brought the island to life was impressive. I loved the detailed scenery and how well the animal characters were designed. It all added so much to the atmosphere. The music caught my attention too, adding impact to the key scenes. Roz’s bond with the animals, especially Brightbill, felt heartfelt in a way. I also liked how their relationship was used to show themes of acceptance and cooperation.

There were a few moments where the pacing felt a bit slow, and I could see how younger kids might lose interest during those parts. But I appreciated the deeper messages about nature and learning to understand differences. Those themes really resonated with me and made the story memorable. Overall, ‘The Wild Robot’ was a charming movie that works for both kids and adults. 3.5/5.

Just finished ‘Donnie Darko,’ and it’s funny to think that about a year and a half ago, I tried watching it for the first time. I remember getting bored halfway through, losing focus, and even falling asleep before waking up to the ending. Somehow, I counted that as a full watch. Just stupid man. This time, though, I actually watched it properly, and wow, what an incredible film. I was genuinely blown away by Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance this time round, especially knowing he was only 19 at the time. The cast as a whole was impressive too! His sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze (RIP to the legend), Drew Barrymore even!

Also, the opening scene of the director’s cut, set to “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS, was both haunting and moving. That choice of song hit me hard, and it was a perfect start; RIP Michael Hutchence, another true legend. I love how ‘Donnie Darko’ mixes elements of horror and thriller in such an understated way. It’s often overlooked, but it really nails that ability to simmer thoughts so deeply that they stick long after the credits roll.

I felt engaged the whole way through, partly because it lets you interpret its themes and find your own meaning. It’s rare for a film to pull off that balance of engaging and challenging viewers while leaving so much to unravel. The story doesn’t just tell you what to think; it urges you to think. The mysteries around the characters are fascinating, and when the plot finally twists on you, it leaves an impact.

I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys psychological films that push your mind a bit. It reminded me of ‘Requiem for a Dream’ in some strange way, which I’m actually planning to rewatch tomorrow; it’s another great one. I saw someone describe ‘Donnie Darko’ perfectly on Reddit: the events were always meant to happen, but those 28 days gave Donnie the chance to experience love and other pieces of life. That idea stayed with me. Honestly, it’s top class! 4.5/5.

Finished ‘Rango’ yesterday, and I have to say, this film is way too underrated. The last time I watched it was back in the day with my family at the cinema, likely the day of its release! It’s been ages since then, but I’m glad I revisited it. ‘Rango’ is honestly great, and it has more substance than I remembered. The plot is solid and holds up surprisingly well.

Johnny Depp voices ‘Rango’ with skill, bringing character and wit to the chameleon as he evolves from timid and unsure to a brave hero. His transformation is actually really satisfying to watch. And the supporting cast! They add so much to the film. Rattlesnake Jake steals every scene he’s in with that menacing presence; just a very cool character.

For me, ‘Rango’ is great and absolutely earned its merits, even winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. I think it’s secured its place as a modern animated classic, even if it doesn’t get brought up as often as it deserves. I’m glad I gave it another watch; it’s still as entertaining and clever as ever. 3.5/5.

Winter Light, 1963 - ★★★★ https://letterboxd.com/joeelsey14/film/winter-light/ letterboxd-review-708650635 Tue, 5 Nov 2024 14:47:57 +1300 2024-11-05 No Winter Light 1963 4.0 29455 <![CDATA[

I just finished ‘Winter Light,’ and I have to say, this one really stood out for me. I’ve never given much attention to Bergman’s work before; I didn’t fully connect with ‘Persona,’ and although I enjoyed ‘The Seventh Seal,’ with that incredible concept of death and the game of chess, I think ‘Winter Light’ resonated even more. It felt clearer, more focused, and honestly, just more impactful.

The story follows a pastor who’s grappling with a crisis of faith after losing his wife, torn up with guilt over a relationship with a lonely teacher. When a troubled young father reaches out to him for guidance, he finds himself almost crumbling under the weight of his own doubts and despair. Bergman’s approach here is so controlled yet so deeply affecting. He lays out the pastor’s struggle in a way that doesn’t shy away from the complexities of faith and doubt. The film dives into Christianity and religion from so many angles that it feels like Bergman is working out his own questions on screen; and somehow, that made it feel incredibly modern, especially for something made in 1963.

What really amazed me is how engaging the whole experience was. The pacing was sharp, the runtime never dragged, and yet it managed to pack in so much meaning. I thought the whole thing was visually stunning too; Bergman’s technical skill and sensitivity to these themes really made it feel like a piece of art. This one left me thinking deeply and appreciating Bergman’s work in a way I hadn’t before. Huge credit where it’s due! 4/5.

Just finished ‘Black Swan,’ and it’s a stunning film in so many ways. I found it fascinating, though my girlfriend didn’t enjoy it as much. The only drawback was that parts of the story felt confusing, and I found myself needing to do a bit of research to fully grasp certain details. I just wish it had been clearer on first watch.

The film does an incredible job exploring the boundaries of mental illness, sanity, and the all-consuming drive for perfection. It shows how that pursuit can twist someone away from their humanity and make them lose sight of what it means to be flawed and human. Natalie Portman was absolutely phenomenal; her Oscar win in 2011 was beyond deserved. Vincent Cassel, though playing a very unlikeable character, also gave a strong performance, adding layers to Nina’s journey.

Darren Aronofsky’s direction, paired with beautifully haunting cinematography, perfectly matched the intensity of Nina’s psychological descent. At times, it’s hard to tell what’s real due to her hallucinations and the overwhelming pressure she’s under, but that adds to the film’s impact. And while the characters around her might feel one-dimensional, it works since the story is completely filtered through Nina’s deteriorating perspective.

After piecing it all together, I’d say ‘Black Swan’ is a challenging but rewarding film, one that leaves a lasting impression and likely gets richer with each watch. 4.5/5.

Just finished watching ‘The Sword in the Stone,’ and honestly, it was nothing special. Maybe I’m setting the bar too high for an early ’60s animation, but it felt a bit lacking, especially compared to ‘The Black Cauldron,’ which I enjoyed way more. The film title itself feels a bit misleading; the sword barely got five minutes of screen time. Archimedes, though, was pretty funny and definitely the standout character for me, while Merlin could’ve been a lot better or at least had more action.

I did appreciate the futuristic references, like Merlin talking about the future, which added a fun twist. The animation was decent for its time, but the story didn’t seem to go anywhere, and Arthur’s character development felt thin; just him learning about nature through animal transformations and lessons about survival. The whole King Arthur legend is barely touched on, with just a quick song at the beginning and end. The rest is pretty much standard Disney magic and animal scenes, which is probably why I’d rank this one fairly low in the Disney lineup. 2/5.

Having just finished ‘Inception’ again, I can say it’s truly a film that needs multiple viewings to be fully understood. The first time I watched it, I was so caught up in trying to follow the plot’s complexity that I didn’t quite grasp the depth. But this second watch really pulled me in; the more you understand this film, the more you fall in love with its concept and craftsmanship. Nolan clearly thought through every aspect of the dream world and translated it brilliantly to the big screen, and everything the characters say about dreams feels eerily relatable, like moments you’ve experienced yourself.

The CGI and VFX were incredible, adding a stunning, surreal quality to each layered dreamscape. And as for the story itself, it’s almost hard to believe someone could come up with a concept this original. ‘Inception’ is fiercely intelligent and so meticulously constructed that it feels unlike anything else out there.

Plus, Hans Zimmer’s score, especially “Time” is hauntingly beautiful, giving me chills each time. Between the mesmerising score, Nolan’s direction, and powerful performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, and Marion Cotillard, this film is beyond impressive. Extraordinary in fact! 5/5!

‘The Black Cauldron’ is actually a pretty solid film; I enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s got that classic, pre-90s Disney animation style that’s fun to revisit, and I could tell right away by the overall look and feel. As a Welsh viewer, I appreciated the Welsh-sounding character names; although they murdered the pronunciations 🤣. Regardless, it gave the film an extra layer of connection for me. The animation, effects, and storyline all work well together, and it’s impressive how easily ‘The Chronicles of Prydain’ books lend themselves to adaptation.

I’ve heard Disney left out scenes they thought were too dark for the film, which definitely has me curious to see a director’s cut. If they really do have the rights back, I’d love to see them go all out on a fresh adaptation. Still, this was a pretty decent watch. 3/5.

Genuinely, ‘Gladiator’ is a masterpiece that I absolutely adore. The score is something I could listen to a hundred times over; “Now We Are Free” gives me chills every time. Hans Zimmer is undoubtedly the greatest composer of all time! There’s no debate about it. As for the film itself, it presents a sublime plot that showcases Ridley Scott’s mastery of storytelling. With its impeccable narrative and spectacular action sequences, this epic historical drama is truly an unforgettable experience that exceeds all expectations.

Russell Crowe gives an iconic performance as Maximus, capturing a perfect blend of power, vulnerability, and relentless resolve. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Commodus is deeply unsettling; he embodies the role with an extraordinary ability to bring to life a character who is both complex and morally twisted.

The film’s visual grandeur is astonishing. The meticulous attention to detail in the recreation of ancient Rome, the stunning Colosseum, and the thrilling gladiatorial battles creates an unparalleled viewing experience. ‘Gladiator’ is a film that will stick with me forever. I truly love it, and I can’t wait to watch the extended version soon; likely after I watch the newly anticipated ‘Gladiator II’ 🤩. 5/5!

Yesterday, I finished my second watch of ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,’ and honestly, it’s a pretty solid film, far better than the 2.5 average rating it has on here yet again! I understand some of the criticism, but I’d personally rate it higher. Choosing between Depp and Mads as Grindelwald is tough, but Mads might just edge it for me here. His performance is shockingly good; he brings his own intensity to the role. I still miss Depp, but Mikkelsen’s take has plenty to love, and I think both work in their own way.

The best part of the film for me was definitely how Dumbledore’s secrets unraveled, especially Ariana’s backstory and Credence’s history—both were handled so well. I thought the blood pact scene between Dumbledore and Grindelwald near the end was fantastic, visually and emotionally powerful, and it brought real weight to their connection. On top of that, Richard Coyle as Aberforth was spot-on casting, fitting seamlessly into the story.

It was nice seeing new faces like Lally and getting more of Bunty’s character, even if Tina’s absence was obvious. Some plot holes are definitely there, but overall, I had a lot of fun with this one. I’m genuinely disappointed we’re likely missing out on the fourth and fifth films, especially after enjoying so much of this trilogy. Still, this one was a solid, fun watch. 3.5/5.

I’ve just rewatched ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,’ and honestly, I enjoyed it just as much as when I first saw it in cinemas back in 2018. Maybe it’s the Harry Potter fan in me, but I can’t quite get why this movie gets an average 2.5 rating on Letterboxd. To me, it flows well, has a solid dose of humor, a decent plot, and a great cast. Depp as Grindelwald was fantastic, bringing a menacing yet oddly charismatic vibe, and Jude Law as Dumbledore added so much, even if the timeline feels inaccurate when you consider how he’s roughly the same age as he was in ‘The Half-Blood Prince’ flashbacks.

I’m willing to bet some of these inconsistencies will smooth out in future instalments, especially considering how much we’re seeing through unreliable perspectives, like Grindelwald’s and Leta’s. And I get that some people felt let down by the way Newt and his bond with the fantastic beasts took a back seat; those creatures, which added such magic in the first film, only appear here and there. Still, I think the movie got an overly harsh response from critics initially. The plot’s actually pretty easy to follow; I’m not sure where people found it confusing.

It’s gutting Depp didn’t return for the third movie, though Mads Mikkelsen is incredible, so that softens the blow a bit. Overall, this is still an enjoyable watch for me. 3.5/5.

‘Oldboy’ is another film I can’t believe I hadn’t watched until now. I’ve seen a few of Chan-Wook’s films, particularly ‘The Handmaiden,’ which I thought was great, but somehow I never got around to ‘Oldboy,’ even though it’s been on my list for over a year. Now that I have, I can see why it’s held up as a classic! It was utterly phenomenal. That twist completely floored me; I did not see it coming at all. I honestly don’t get how people say the twist is overrated. I firmly disagree. It’s so well-written and intensely original. Just thinking about someone coming up with that plot is mind-blowing. Also, huge kudos to Choi Min-sik. His acting range was absolutely phenomenal.

The whole movie is insane, not only for the shocking story but for its brilliant production quality. The cinematography, the soundtrack, and the disturbing yet perfect script just pull it all together. It’s rare to have a film where every little detail falls into place, and this one absolutely nails it, coming full circle in such a satisfying way. The simple takeaway here is that ignorance is bliss, and knowledge comes with pain and regret. The movie hits that theme hard and with real depth.

This film represents everything I love about Korean cinema. You read the summary and think you know what you’re getting into, but the story goes beyond your expectations, giving you both what you anticipated and an unpredictable mix of comedic, tragic, and disturbing moments that keep you completely off-balance. It’s going to be very tough to decide if ‘Oldboy’ tops my two favourite Korean films, ‘Parasite’ and ‘Memories of Murder.’ This film is haunting, impressive and pretty unforgettable 👏.

Watching ‘Meet the Robinsons’ for the first time was such a great surprise for me. I thought I knew what I was in for, but this film ended up being way more impactful than I expected. It was loads of fun, but also packed with a lesson that really hit home: keep moving forward, never lose hope, and don’t dwell on the past. The bond between Wilbur and Lewis was central to all this, and watching Lewis realize the importance of these lessons while stopping the villain and finding his family gave the story a really meaningful arc. Honestly, this has to be one of Disney’s most underrated animations.

And I’ve got to say, Michael Yagoobian, or “Goob,” was a character I’d never forget even though I hadn’t actually seen this film before. My friends and I would joke about him endlessly for no real reason when we were younger, so when he finally showed up on screen, I was crying with laughter. Yagoobian is just so elite man 🤣; he’s ridiculous, but he works perfectly in the story. It’s funny because ‘Meet the Robinsons’ comes across at first as just a wacky, over-the-top family movie, but once you get through it, you realise how deep and emotional it really is.

It’s kinda wild how this one flies under the radar for so many Disney fans, myself included, since I’d never actually seen it before. Now that I have, I’d say it’s a must-watch and easily one of the better Disney films I’ve seen. 3.5/5.

‘Megalopolis’ is a tough one for me to review. On one hand, the cast is incredible. Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight; the performances were solid across the board. I could go on about how well they acted, but somehow the film itself felt like a lot of… well, nothing. The plot was hard to follow and just didn’t have much to it. I got the gist of the events, but most of it came off as confusing, and to be honest, a bit hollow. And normally, I love Coppola; The ‘Godfather’ films are just masterpieces.

This one, though, feels like a mess. Things are happening on screen, but it’s all so disconnected.
The movie tries hard to come off as deep and thought-provoking, but it ends up feeling pretentious, like it’s aiming more for critics or for people who love to pretend they understand all the hidden meanings, even when they’re not really there. From what I’ve seen online, critics don’t even seem to like it, so that’s saying something. I don’t want to take away from the cast; I felt they did a great job with what they were given, but the plot they had to work with just didn’t go anywhere.

It’s honestly like watching a fever dream. Scenes and characters are introduced, there’s a hint of a plot, and then nothing follows through. There’s even this whole thing about Caesar having a superpower to stop time, but it’s barely used and ends up feeling irrelevant. In the end, the whole thing feels like Coppola took fragments of his dreams and tried piecing them into a movie, and as you’d expect, it just doesn’t work. As blunt as I can be, it was complete horseshit and ridiculously overhyped prior to its release!

Overall, ‘Megalopolis’ is a complete mess. It’s full of random, disconnected ideas that never fully come together, trying to be profound but ending up unintentionally funny at times. It’s a spectacle, but not in a good way. For me, it was sadly just VERY disappointing. 1.5/5.

‘It’s What’s Inside’ might just be one of the biggest brain-twisters I’ve ever seen. As much as I enjoyed it, by the end, I was genuinely lost; especially after that twist in the last 15 minutes. I’d definitely rewatch it down the line just to piece things together better, but wow, this one really left my head spinning! The concept felt fresh and incredibly creative, and I loved the unique approach. But it did get to be a bit much keeping track of who was who. I struggled to remember characters’ names, let alone follow all the body-switching! It was definitely a challenging first watch.

Director Greg Jardin deserves major credit here! The storytelling is tight, and the visuals and cinematography are impressive. You can tell that complex, puzzle-like vibe was exactly what they were going for, and they pulled it off well. It feels like a movie made to be watched again, where you can dig deeper into the characters’ motives and track each journey, especially with that final twist shaking up everything.

I thought the cast was on point, and every time a character switched bodies (at least in the switches I managed to follow), you could still feel their original personality come through! The actors really nailed that. The pacing worked well, and there were a few subtle bits of humour that genuinely made me laugh. Genre-wise, I honestly don’t even know where I’d place this; it was just that intricate. I had to pause and rewind multiple times near the end to even keep up! Overall, if you’re into films that keep you guessing, this one’s worth a watch. 3.5/5.

I had a fantastic time watching ‘John Wick: Chapter 2!’ Honestly, I think I even enjoyed it slightly more than the first film. As I dive into this tetralogy for the first time, I’m genuinely glad to find myself having such a good time watching the films. This sequel really steps up its game, with a clearer, more engaging, and exciting story. There are definitely standout moments, especially the final scene and a specific sequence in the mirrored room that reminded me of the ending of Michael Mann’s ‘Heat.’ Both were intense yet impactful and carried a certain elegance. Those scenes really were gripping!

The action sequences continue to impress me, even if it’s becoming a bit hard to ignore the plot armour around John Wick as the story unfolds. One of my favorite scenes features Keanu Reeves and Common in a fierce struggle that gets hilariously interrupted as they enter the Rome Continental’s reception area. The opener is just as thrilling, especially with the car work. Honestly, it’s all pretty exhilarating. I love how the closing scene sets up the third chapter so ominously and intensely, and I can’t wait to watch it soon!

I have to give credit to Stahelski as an action movie director; he’s proven his talent with this sequel. The crisp edits keep everything moving quickly, ensuring there are no dull moments, and I appreciate how he avoids making the plot feel contrived. And let’s not forget about Keanu Reeves! Nobody else could embody Wick like he does. Kudos to Scamarcio for delivering an outstanding performance as Santino D’Antonio; he made for a memorable villain. Common was also impressive as Cassian, especially with him being a rapper by trade. It was also awesome to see McShane as Winston again, and ‘The Matrix’ reunion with Laurence Fishburne had me laughing! Overall, I truly enjoyed this film. 4/5.

‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ lived up to the hype for me. I saw the glowing reviews on Letterboxd and went in with high expectations, and in all fairness, it delivered. In silent films, facial expressions are key, and this film absolutely excels in that regard. Every single close-up felt like a masterclass in conveying raw emotion, especially with Joan’s trial and suffering being so vividly portrayed. The harsh grip of the Catholic Church and the injustice of the trial really stood out to me, but what struck me most was how hope and redemption still managed to shine through in the end.

I’ve watched a handful of silent films like ‘Nosferatu’ and ‘Persona,’ but ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ felt like it was on a completely different level. What makes this film feel so modern, especially for something made in the 1920s, is Carl Dreyer’s brilliant use of close-ups. They weren’t common in films back then, but here they’re used so powerfully that I was fully absorbed and didn’t even miss the absence of dialogue. Renee Falconetti was in her mid-thirties, which at first felt like a stretch to play a nineteen-year-old Joan, but her performance was so captivating that I didn’t really notice until I was halfway through the film.

The score throughout was brilliant and really elevated the atmosphere of the film, and that ending, just wow. Incredibly powerful. It’s rare for me to get so mentally swept up in a film from this era, but this one absolutely did the trick. For something made in the 1920s, it’s seriously impressive. Also, the fact that it’s now 1am and I finished the film just 15 minutes ago speaks volumes! Kudos to Dreyer for keeping me hooked the entire time instead of putting me to sleep like Bergman does.

In all, this is easily one of the best silent films I’ve seen, and I get why it’s considered one of the greats. A big clap from me! 4.5/5.

Sidney Lumet is a true genius in my book! I’ve been a huge fan of his ever since watching ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ and ‘12 Angry Men’; both absolute masterpieces! I feel while ‘Network’ doesn’t quite top either of these films, I can see why people call it one of his finest works. The plot is undeniably powerful, even if it felt slightly tedious at two hours. But honestly, the ending more than makes up for the runtime! It’s just wild!

Peter Finch’s performance as Howard Beale is nothing short of legendary. He fully earned that Oscar, portraying a fired news anchor turned media sensation with such intensity. Finch’s “mad as hell” speech is unforgettable, and it’s crazy how ‘Network’ predicted today’s world of sensationalised media. Lumet gave us a warning about how news would turn into infotainment, and it feels so relevant now.

Faye Dunaway and William Holden were equally impressive. Dunaway’s portrayal of the ruthless Diana Christensen was mesmerising, and Holden’s Max Schumacher brought a much-needed moral compass to the chaos. Their performances, alongside Finch’s, made the film feel less like fiction and more like a snapshot of the modern media world. I think it’s kind of eerie how accurate Lumet was in showing the manipulation of news for profit.

What struck me most is how real ‘Network’ felt; like we’re watching our own reality play out on screen. Ned Beatty’s speech on globalism and Finch’s rant about the end of individuality hit harder now than ever. This film feels utterly timeless. While it may not be my favourite of Sidney Lumet’s works, it’s undeniably one of the most important films of the ’70s and beyond. 4.5/5.

It’s kind of crazy that I’d never actually sat down and properly watched ‘Finding Nemo’ before, especially considering how much of a household name it is. I always knew about it, but it just didn’t catch my interest when I was younger. That said, I’m glad I finally watched it because it did live up to my expectations. Crush is hands down the best character; just so funny: “You, Mini-Man, takin' on the jellies. You've got serious thrill issues, dude. Awesome” 🤣. To be fair, I already had a soft spot for Crush after riding his coaster at Disneyland Paris, so seeing him come to life in the film was awesome, even with his limited screen time 🤣.

The film is packed with memorable characters. Pretty much everyone they meet along the way adds something fun or interesting, which keeps it engaging throughout. While it doesn’t top my personal Pixar favourites like ‘Toy Story 3,’ ‘Cars,’ ‘Up’ or ‘Monsters University,’ I was pleasantly surprised by how funny, smart, and emotional it turned out to be. Disney actually managed to make a film about fish cool, which is pretty epic if you ask me! 3.5/5.
