A horror film that has something to say about how religion can affect lives. About a preacher who lost his faith, thinks demons are just thoughts and exorcisms are nothing but scams. Well, let's see about that, shall we? When he picks that envelope, you know he's in for a surprise. The mockumentary style gives it that natural feel, Cotton is a likeable guy and it's pretty funny when he sets up and performs the fake exorcism. Seems like a job well done. Until Nell reappears. And she's not doing so hunky dory. You anticipated that, didn't you?
OK, but from this point on the movie has a few unexpected turns in store. It starts to play with the viewer, leaking bits of information that shed new light on what's going on. And when you're finally reasonably sure about what's wrong with poor Nell, it makes another bold move. There's some clever writing going on here and it has a few creepy, bone crunching scenes, although it feels like it doesn't fully use its horror potential. Especially during the climax. There's a freakish nightmare going on that perhaps should have lasted a little longer.
