It's quite a deja vu from the Napoleon theater experience, watching a very expensive looking farce. The story is quite ridiculous and the film never managed to pull me in. The characters are charicatures and sometimes unintentially funny. Even the action sometimes looks weird and over edited, with sections visibly missing and setpieces disappearing. Some of the action is still entertaining, which is the only reason this film isn't a total dumpster fire.
]]>Cool end to a cool trilogy, largely more of the same but with a heavy dose of civil war. Not my favourite westerns, but undeniably iconic. This film could have probably done with some 40-50 minutes or so shaved off. Still trying to figure out why a man with dark brown hair gets called blondie.
]]>Excessively obscene, as you come to expect from Deadpool. It's a barrage of dirty jokes and brutal action, and while certainly not all of it lands, it had me cracking up a lot of times. The physical comedy involving brutal action sequences are often hilarious.
]]>It's been a while since i've seen anyone get to the level of evil that the villain has in this film. There's something particularly sickening about a powerful prick that casually does the most heinous shit without having to fear any real consequences, kind of akin to animal abuse.
Anyway, mr. Mikkelsen plays our flawed but highly motivated protagonist in another Danish language film, and i've come to look forward to these since they've been very good so far. This one is pretty bleak, but the acting is solid and the landscapes are gorgeous.
]]>What a banger. This film really set the bar for westerns with its great and snappy dialogue, scenes within scenes, and the dynamic between the varied characters. John Wayne is quality as usual, there's no weak links in the rest of the cast, and the cherry on top is a sheriff office singing scene with Dean Martin.
]]>If this film had better gore, it'd be a perfect film. What's more cool than a bunch of roided sword and board warriors cleaving a path through man and myth, in slowmo, in a fucking thunderstorm? Can we finally get some more of this next? Maybe do something with the Diablo games, demolishing hordes of the most horrifically deformed demons. Or Dragon Age, mages incinerating legions of darkspawn and corrupted abominations. What does it take mr. Snyder?
]]>Furiosa is to Fury Road what Corpus is to Rictus, the stunted little brother. It's a very fun wasteland flick in it's own right, with some great new machines, gnarly action and some surprisingly bleak touches, though held back by some choppy pacing, the fragmented story, and to be honest, Hemsworth being a bit of a weak link in the acting department. Dementus kind of flips between being a jaded wasteland philosopher and a petulant child, a combination that doesn't work that well especially due to the latter.
Maybe it's unfair to hold a fun film like this to the towering standard that Fury Road set, but at the same time, why set bars but to try and meet them or raise them again.
]]>If only this film had been just a little bit better and sold a few more tickets, this could have turned into an epic film series featuring all the big characters from Warcraft lore, alongside some amazing looking visuals.
Even through the clunky story and acting, there are glimpses of the campy and over the top greatness of the world of Warcraft. The roid rage Orcs and Fel magic are the stars of the show, but these are really the tip of the iceberg that contains so many races, dragons, demons and gods, pulling strings, slinging magic and going to war, not getting to see them on the big screen is one of the big disappointments of our time.
]]>From famous director Dude Wealthy, Revolver is some kind of weirdly twisted (yes, even more so) version of Fight Club, in a casino jacket. And there's a triad involved or something. And Statham looks weird in a wig. And Liotta plays a funny guy who lives in a tanning booth. I just found this buried in my harddrive somewhere and decided to vegetate on the couch and watch it in a partial state of delirium because i'm bloody ill.
]]>That was ok. We purposefully didn't watch it in the theater so we could watch it at home in 2 parts, because it just didn't seem like much of a theater film. Nolan does his best to make the story as hard to follow as possible by chopping the story in bits and throwing them in the timeline mixer for no apparent reason.
Oppenheimers life is also just not very interesting beyond making an atom bomb, and yet the morbid yet beautiful science of making an atom bomb was largely glossed over in favour of the vague politics surrounding the whole ordeal.
As usual i don't know what the academy is smoking giving this film such an oscar sweep.
]]>2007 was a mixed year. I was 13, which is a horrible age to be alive, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare hit the shelves, which is a pretty sweet videogame, and Javier Bardem was hitting the big screens with a haircut that can accurately be described as illegal.
I wanted to rewatch this film because it just pops up in my brain sometimes. It has a subdued and quiet atmosphere, but still manages to be pretty badass and has such good performances from the main 3 characters. There's not a ton of exposition but through the limited lines and actions of the characters you learn so much about them.
]]>Certainly not for me. I like my films to have a plot that could fill more than a post-it note. This could easily have been a short film 20 minutes long instead of nearly 2 hours, but even then i wouldn't have liked it.
If you're thinking ''boy i could really go for a glacial and uncomfortable film with naked ScarJo and a bunch of Scottish penises'' then say no more, this is the flick for you. And it's basically all you're going to get, for nearly 2 hours.
]]>The 2nd watch was even better, as expected. I was soaking in every moment and got more immersed rather than watching it from a bit of a ''distance'' trying to make sure everything makes sense. The acting really stood out as being fantastic across the board and the emotional bits hit me harder. The wait for part 3 is looking daunting.
]]>Monumental. It must have taken so long to finalise this cut. There's a crazy density but it still takes its time on some aspects that demand you take the time. And yet it still feels like it was a little too short, a little too trimmed. Sometimes the film is a bit too sterile. But damn what a lot of magnificent scenes. I know i need to go watch this again soon to catch more details and update my opinion. The first one really struck me on the second watch, and i feel like that's only amplified with the sequel.
]]>One of the worst classic westerns i've seen when it comes to the writing, but the cool factor steps up and carries this film all by itself. Clint Eastwood certainly contributes to that. I think it has something to do with the whole thing being so much like the western kid books and comics i absorbed as a child.
]]>Lovely film. Nothing mindblowing, but i like how it feels like a sequel to a story you can write yourself after seeing this one. Most of the big stuff already took place before this story happens, but here you got John Reilly and Gwyneth Paltrow playing some absolute trash people, and a mysterious stranger helping them out of the trash piles they dive into face first.
]]>Each PTA film is rather different, but one thing they all have in common is having a incredibly talented cast. I could take or leave the more out there shit happening in this film, but the moment to moment acting and overall story arc are gripping.
]]>This is the 2nd Kubrick film i've watched after the Shining that has very loud audio that can only be described as ''really fucking obnoxious''.
I'll not be watching any more Kubrick films.
Also nobody has ever been on more potent acid than Kubrick was when making this film. It starts decent and looks great for its age, but is otherwise mostly a piece of shit.
]]>Not my jam in the slightest. Unpleasant and incoherent.
]]>Looks like it cost a lot of money, hoisting all of those people into costume, but style over substance comes to mind with this film. You go into it expecting a film about Napoleon the conqueror, but you get Napoleon the frustrated cuck. I was hoping to leave the theater knowing a lot more about Napoleon, but i can't really say i learned anything. To its credit, i can't say i was ever bored while watching it.
]]>Measured, subdued, raw and really good. Rob goes around reminding everybody what life is really about while simultaneously dealing with his anxiety and loss. The approval of faceless strangers isn't going to make you happy. Revenge isn't going to bring back what you lost.
]]>Possibly the bleakest film i've seen. Don't really see the point of the story, besides maybe life sucks and then you die, but that's the case with most Coen films. They're more about the experience, abstract feelings and exploration. Can't say i enjoyed this one a lot but it does feel real in its misery to do with poverty, boredom and dying dreams, so props to it for that.
]]>These films are the ultimate popcorn entertainment. Sit your ass in a Dolby room with lots of empty calories on your lap, watch a ridiculous but impressive spectacle that luckily doesn't take itself very seriously, and forget what happened a week later.
I went to see the last one in a movie theater too but forgot what happened or who are in it completely. I'm sure the same will happen here before part 2 comes out.
]]>Is this a James Bond film from the 50's? The plot feels about that old and it lacks the snappy Ritchie comedy that Ritchie does.
]]>Caught it on a plane and watched knowing nothing about it other than it being marked ''comedy''. It did seem like it was trying quite hard to be funny at times but can't say it really got a chuckle out of me. It's too long and feels pretty disjointed at times, but i enjoyed watching the Brad Pitt scenes.
]]>Loved it even more on rewatching it. Feels like a dark comedy. The way the googly eyed H.W. is installed by Daniel as his ''business partner''. The way Eli is barfing nonsense to his congregation and them eating it up. The way Daniel and Eli loathe and humiliate eachother on their roads to get what power they can get. The way Daniel looks at everybody like they're worms wriggling in and around his life, trying to get a little slice of his success. Flapping hands, drinking milkshakes and bastards from baskets.
PTA and DDL are nothing short of perfect together.
]]>Probably not fair to judge a film before finishing it, but golly it just couldn't hold my interest. Cool actors, a few interesting scenes, but toward the middle i'm just bored out of my mind.
]]>More tongue in cheek and more video gamey than ever. Obviously loads of action but sometimes the action is a little dull, inbetween the bits that look gnarly or funny enough to get a cringe or a chuckle. Personal favourite boss was the Berliner night club owner, comically big with a comically big revolver he sadly never uses, but with some hilarious ballerina fighting moves. The final fight was a bit of an anticlimax. John gets through all those cool locations for the final group fight to be on a... set of long stairs. Ok.
]]>A fairly light but phenomenal experience. One of the best modern western releases alongside Bone Tomahawk. Both movies are impeccably casted, both look amazing, and where Bone Tomahawk is brutal and tense, True Grit is its comedic and cozy counterpart. Highly recommended.
]]>Turned it off halfway. There's not a single believable character in this thing, it just all looks and feels so fake and unbelievable, not because of time travel, but of the way people engage with eachother. A romcom that's not funny and really requires you to turn off your brain to buy into the romance.
]]>Horrible, spoiled, rotten bitch makes life miserable for her sister both before and after realising the world is ending. Well acted and quite frustrating to watch. Weirdly long and unnecessary intro spoils the entire movie. Great visuals. Collision path did not make sense, a planet with the mass so much greater than earth wouldn't slingshot around us, we'd just be thrown out of our orbit. Effects on our planet would have been much greater on the first pass. Chance of rogue planet finding our solar system, let alone manage to get this close to earth, unspeakably small.
]]>There's a lot of potential cool stuff in this film, but how much parody can you layer on top of parody? All of it, says Love and Thunder.
]]>Quite entertaining throughout, i'm glad they went back to not taking this shit seriously. My favourite part is when the boys maim and kill hundreds of cops and bystanders dragging a metal cube through Rio, and then go and celebrate the slaughter. Question now is if the next movies can increase this death toll in any way. Seems unlikely.
]]>Decided to watch the remainder of Coen movies i haven't seen, starting at the lowest rated on this website. Not that i personally agree since i've rated some of theirs lower than this one now, but i do find it funny that this one is still so good. The Coens know how to make movies.
It starts off slow and that dead dog at the start is damn near enough to turn it off, but i'm glad i stuck with it because it's so goddamn goofy and charming. Loved Hanks and Simmons with their wacky characters.
]]>This seems like the first one that starts taking itself seriously. It's a franchise at this point and it looks like it wants to ride on people liking these characters. But the more serious tone just doesn't do anything for these films and the actors don't work with a plot like this either. Just give me some dumb excuse for a plot to watch pimped cars defying physics, combined with hilarious dialogue.
]]>Coolest cars yet and love the change of scenery. Terrible protagonist though.
]]>Fun follow up to the first, again quite dumb and over the top but doesn't take itself seriously.
]]>Classic. Fun, goofy, dumb and a hit with the boys back in the day.
]]>Arnold as the Terminator is just really funny. The rest of the film is good, but that performance lifts it quite a bit. Overall cool concept too, besides the horrendous timeloop paradox and aging visuals. Always fun to see films about the ''future'' and see the same 80's haircuts.
]]>An unexpected stinker from Paul Anderson. I suppose i'm not the target audience for this film. The only interesting moments had Sean Penn eject a girl from his bike when taking off, and Bradley Cooper going around getting in peoples faces. The biggest disappointment was not getting a satisfying conclusion with Bradley Cooper beating the shit out of the little snots that are our protagonists for wrecking his house and car.
]]>Bit of a snorefest. The plot is so thin you'd think this is a filler episode on a TV show, somewhere in the middle of the season between the usual action and seperate from the real plot.
I guess the point is that life sucks in rural American drug towns. It does all look pretty convincing and miserable, so it has that going for it. I'd say skip it for something more interesting unless this happens to be a niche you are into.
]]>What a fucking miserable film. It's completely engrossing, emotional, and thought provoking, and so frustrating because it's hard to be truly mad at some of the people who turn their backs on their good friend just because of how unfortunate the situation is. A small girl claims to be sexually abused in graphic detail, what are you going to do and how are you going to treat the suspect?
The way the suspect (the viewers know he's innocent) gets treated here is rage inducing, and it goes on to highlight the real evil that is present in the small Danish town. Lines get crossed that should never be crossed in any circumstances, and a man's life gets a gaping wound that will never close.
]]>A really fun romp that feels like a mix between Guy Ritchie and Tarantino. You've got the colourful characters with introduction animations, extreme violence, varied accents and a relaxed conversational vibe (sometimes even during fights). Towards the end it started to feel a bit long, but i really enjoyed it.
]]>Maverick is decidedly less of a prick after 35 years, which is one of the things that elevates this film above its predecessor. It's still about hot shots flying planes, but with more serious undertones and a little less macho man bare chested huffing and puffing, even with the young cast of ambitious new pilots. Besides Tom Cruises good acting in this, standout performance for me is the new macho dude Hangman, played by Glenn Powell. He takes Mavericks place as the new overconfident prick, but does it with more of a tongue in cheek performance and more charisma, which actually makes him a bit likeable.
]]>What a depraved mess, and i mean that in the best possible way. It's something i've come to expect when Philip Hoffman stars in it, but this film is just another level of depravity and bleakness. The acting is phenomenal which gives this the punch it needs.
]]>This is an ode to everything Viking, the history but especially the myths and religion. It's dripping with atmosphere, and it feels as though every detail is a reference to something from Viking legend.
I just wish it had more combat. What's there is interesting and visceral, but there's just not that much of it. For a supposed bloody Viking revenge saga, it could have used more.
]]>Sure he's right about some of the subjects, but the show also just isn't funny. It's kind of a self congratulatory mess. Also he constantly uses his race as a defense of ''lol but we niggas got it worse''. Get over yourself.
]]>Pretty fun action flick, though i'd say it falls off after the first half. The second half goes full Marvel again with eye melting CGI fights that just kind of lose all meaning because it's infinite power vs almost infinite power, and dumb plot developments. The first half has some adrenaline pumping kung fu badassery (which was especially fun in the movie theater) and lets the characters be fun and goofy before they inevitably find their boring destiny and feelings of responsibility.
]]>Starts off kind of generic and with pacing all over the place, but stick with it and you'll get rewarded with a unique slice of fun and fucked up horror. When the film threw off it's shackles i wanted it to keep rampaging. I'm hoping for a sequel.
]]>Just as good on the 2nd watch. Gripping and thrilling, bombastic and gorgeous. Hyped for part 2!
]]>
