Synopsis
Life is the ultimate work of art.
Two girlfriends on a summer holiday in Spain become enamored with the same painter, unaware that his ex-wife, with whom he has a tempestuous relationship, is about to re-enter the picture.

Me when I see Penélope Cruz: 😍😍😩😩😳😳😏😏

Glib and carelessly-imagined ode to privilege. I tried to ignore my distaste for the superficial artsiness of the characters, but after the scene where the blonde girl decided it would be kicks to go to a slummy-looking neighborhood and photograph sex-workers I just couldn't. Esp. when the SW were all "Hello, American Lady Woman! We love you! Come taste the wines and cheeses of my village!"
An art-adjacent lifestyle is one thing, an arts career is another.

How the fuck am I not supposed to love a movie where Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Scarjo are in a relationship all together?
I like to call this my biggest guilty pleasure but at the same time I think it’s a genuinely brilliant comedy with phenomenal acting. It starts off as a fairly simple yet original romcom that’s super clever and entertaining. I find it to be weirdly pretentious and self-indulgent yet also really aware of itself. It doesn’t make sense, I know, but this movie does a lot of interesting and weird things with its writing that really click with me. Also, the entire movie has this insane overly-exaggerated use of narration that I found hilarious and effective,…

I'm conflicted about this.
I could watch Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem argue bilingually forever, that energy! Plus the cast is incredible.
Let's be real though, the voice over is beyond ridiculous. Sometimes redundant other times its just telling us what the characters are feeling which feels like it undercuts what the actors should be conveying.
Oh and the characters are just tiresome for the most part. It felt like an example of how men writing women exploring their desires doesn't quite work. Especially when it's Woody Allen.
Chris Messina watch: the dull but nice, if vapid and judgemental, fiance of Rebecca Hall who doesn't get to share in that sexy vibe this movie is trying to sell.
-
You know it's a Woody Allen movie because people who have clearly never said the phrase "making love" utter it 500 times.
I always like these newer Woody Allen movies because it's interesting to see who can do the best Allen impression. All the characters have some fast talking Allen traits, but Rebecca Hall really nails the neurotic beats. It's nice to have Javier not playing some sort of scary monster man.
