In this delightful film for children Anjelica Huston pushes a pram with a baby down a hill towards a cliff just so she can catch a kid she wants to turn into a mouse.
Scarier and more disturbing than most modern horror films.

Roeg and Dahl are evil bastards.
And I love them for it.
"This doesn't seem like a Roeg film at all," they say. To which I say "thank goodness!" It feels like a Roeg film filtered through a Jim Henson film, kinda. It feels like a children's horror film should feel, underscored with a whimsical sort of terror, a knowledge of lurking danger that is none-the-less so preposterous that it evokes wonder. This is as much Dahl's influence, though apparently not as much as he would have liked, as it is Henson's or Roeg's; Dahl captured the feeling of a child's interpretation of the world mixed with a certain intelligence that is just a little too knowing.

Should’ve let the kid stay a mouse! I can’t explain it but it’s way scarier to suddenly have a happy ending that feels like it drove in from a different movie and ran over the last two minutes of the story.
On top of this being wildly freaky with its sudden parental deaths and constantly imperiled kids, Roeg subtly exaggerates the key present element of Dahl's stuff, his fascination with a porous reality and ever-present, often subliminal facades that conceal the fantastic and sinister. Also features some unsurprisingly terrific makeup and animatronic effects thanks to Henson's Creature Shop.
have always found this film unnerving particularly the young girl trapped in the painting at the beginning. but what makes this such a fun time is anjelica huston’s deliciously grotesque and over the top performance.
