There's a part early on where the main character is being taught about the medicinal properties of the various plants in the forest. One would naturally assume that this would somehow factor into the plot later on, but one would be wrong. It doesn't matter at all that this character knows about plants, and those plants will never come in useful. It's just something the movie is spending time on, even if it doesn't really matter.
They mention rules, but the rules aren't interesting. And they're defied early enough that one never really gets a sense of the consequences of the defiance. They're never supposed to show their back to their watchers, but we see that casually happening while they…

Welcome to Exposition City, population: everyone watching this movie.
Ishana Night Shyamalan clearly has talent in crafting intrigue and creating an atmosphere, the best parts of the movie are those early eerie moments we spend in the woods, but too often any emotional beat or potential scare is squashed by exhaustive explanation for the next hour or so.
It’s not even frustrating that the final act has this jarring tonal shift made worse by a predicable climax, it’s that the movie rushes through it. Blink once and it’s over. Folklore horror is such a fun subgenre and while the imagery is there, every other aspect falls to the wayside.
