Years after his squad was ambushed during the Gulf War, Major Ben Marco finds himself having terrible nightmares. He begins to doubt that his fellow squad-mate Sergeant Raymond Shaw, now a vice-presidential candidate, is the hero he remembers him being. I used to think this was pointless. Now I think it’s vital. One of the great films made during the George W. Bush administration. Relentlessly cynical about government, the military, ambition, and motherhood. Radically prescient about the way we perceive corporatism, political theater, mental illness, and rage-fueled paranoia stoked by power at the highest levels via media manipulation. Remarkable how this fatalistic script smashes together with Demme’s zooming, Boomer humanism. You wanna see why Barry Jenkins and Paul Thomas Anderson use that brutally intimate into-camera close-up style? Start here. This movie loves faces.

My friend and I went to go see Harold and Kumar in high school and they wouldn't let us in due to the dangers of drugs. But they let us walk right into this movie about a man brainwashed into killing the president or something. I learned my lesson that day: drugs are serious business. More serious than killing the president of The United States (itself no laughing matter.) Luckily, I avoided drugs and alcohol entirely after that day and never had to enter a twelve step program where I would learn to accept a higher power into my life.
The idea that a corporation would have to go to through the trouble of clandestine brainwashing in order to control the president instead of just donating to Pete Buttigieg now seems quaint beyond belief.

Jonathan Demme's frequent grasp on control, even within the most chaotic narrative developments, allows this remake to feel sturdy, like an eye of a hurricane within the camera's focal point. What's beyond the calm is classified.
"So, what you'll feel is a little discomfort in the form of pressure, and also a loud vibrating noise in your head, all of which, of course, is completely normal."

One of those movies that ends up disappointing more than anything else because it has a great cast and crew but doesn't live up to their potential.
The music is the most shocking and unexpected aspect of the picture; even from the opening scene, you can tell that Demme is going to take a drastically different tone from the original film, even if many of the same themes are present. [NOTE: I feel it pertinent to state upfront that I do not condone (though nor would I neccesarily condemn (à la: Doctor Manhattan)) political violence BUT™] If anyone happens to be in the larger Washington DC-area on and around January 20th 2025 with a spare few moments to kill, maybe consider pulling a (The) Manchurian Candidate and save the world some troubl-- I mean, isn't it CRAZY that a film released in 2004 used the phrase "it rules!" to describe a good thing!? Here was me thinking that was a contemporary phrase-- A contemporary phrase from TikTok or Musical.ly-- A phrase reserved for those Rick and Morty role-play videos on the Musical.ly app for example... [*TUGS COLLAR*] How about that Denzel Washington fella' huh?
hell yeah. hell yeah! lots of clever adaptation choices, and Denzel's performance has so much going on. the smartest thing about this is that it's clear that our protagonist IS mentally ill, he just also happens to be correct. honestly, heaven is a three-and-a-half star, 130 minute, big-budget dramatic thriller from 1998-2004
