The title of Modern Times holds a double meaning to the film. It comments on living during the depression-era, but it also comments on Charlie Chaplin’s career during the transition of talkies in cinema. Dropping this silent masterpiece when the silent-era was in the past and where the modern times had talkies dominating the theaters, Chaplin proved to the people that silent films weren’t just a technological constraint in the medium — they held unique merits of storytelling that deem them both viable and irreplaceable.
