Very likable film from René Clair, but not as magical as one might have think. Still, the dreamy things they did was fun.
Beauties of the Night captivates with its magical and enchanting spirit. its glorious staging and art direction shine brilliantly throughout, wrapping the central character, Claude, in dreamy journeys, delving into France's history through the lens of love, blurring the lines within his harsh and monotonous reality. he's a modest music teacher and pianist, struggling to even afford a simple pair of pants. deep inside him, lies a profound aspiration beyond the pursuit of romance amidst the noisy crowd of his small town: to direct an opera and become a true musician. can one own dream become true?
I was expecting something more along the lines of Midnight in Paris, but this is still charming. Borderline 2.5, but I might just be saying that because of Gérard’s fluffy hair.
BlurayRip no MakingOff.
A dreamy sweetheart of a film which really hit home for me despite being pretty light-hearted. Simply and gorgeously staged to capture Claude's reverie, I was rapt, wanting his fantasy to cross into reality, and sympathised with his hypnopompic rage. When his friends change tune from taunting him to tending him it really touched me; to its core, endearing.
French people sure know how to create a whimsical film! This was spectacular!! UN-BLOODY-BELIEVABLE!
Chronic dreamer unable to commodify himself moves through a history of dashed hopes and descension in the downward spiral of his dreams. As he falls, he pays no mind to the possibilites present, so nestled in the opium of imaginary flights, they swiftly turn to nightmares in the neglect of what inspired them. The dreamer can take a single scenario and spin it in a myriad of skeletal structures to have their remains reveal the clearer picture. The dream is fed by the real, despite their apparent distance.
I've never been a big fan of the Cahiers du Cinéma-imposed narrative that the Tradition de Qualité was a garbage movement of a bunch of metteurs en scène staging scripts mostly consisting in adaptations fostering escapist entertainment that is the bane of art and innovation. There's something lavish and quintessentially French about these postwar films that eschews politics (unlike its predecessor movement Poetic Realism and its successor movement the New Wave) and offers a rollicking good time with studio-supported beauty and directorial competence. Les Belles de Nuit is as perfect an example of this as there is.
Gérard Philipe may as well be the poster boy for the Tradition of Quality, with virtually every one of his films having been…
