Slumdog Millionaire, along with its staggered influx of flashbacks, subscribes to the John Wick starter pack (a gun, a dog, dark neon aesthetic, toxic bro's in da club, bitchy hostesses, posh culture) in order to make its monkey man evolve into a badass dude.

All in all, and as others have said, it's Patel's ONLY GOD FORGIVES. The themes are new - and honourable - but the plot is wholly predictable.

Edit: I forgot to mention how much the monastic guru training in the middle act felt like that part in BATMAN BEGINS (and later in DOCTOR STRANGE) ... one other review mentioned it, but I definitely made a mental note I didn't initially transcribe.
