-Government of Iran: What is this, Kamran Shirdel? This is offensive! You're fired from your government job, and we're also banning this!
-Government of Iran (7 years later): Well, seven years have passed. Just release this so I can get it out of my mind. What's the worsse that could happen?
[Documentary wins a national prize for best documentary]
-Government of Iran (1 second later): No, no no... Ban it again!
The day Ryūnosuke Akutagawa conceived In a Grove, the message became clear: "truth" is relative to the perspective of the observer. However, his interview-style dissection separated into seven segments added two more layers of complexity: human convenience and human memory. The former is a component that will shape the truth in a way that aligns with the person's motives, and the latter is an uncontrollable endogenous variable. If you add personality as a fourth layer, we become the most unreliable species on Earth.
Wondrous elliptical exercise with playful New Wave techniques two years before the movement official began in Iran, edited masterfully to create comedy out of a spark of self-awareness of the human condition. Frenetically paced, it's a cascade of a multitude of "truths" that people consider as undeniable allegedly based on: human records, eye witnesses, evidence and its post-examination, conjectures, discrimination, classism, capitalism, "I knew him" and "it couldn't have been any other way". Sounds familiar? The greatest the access to information becomes with each passing generation, the easier it is to manipulate minds and edit, say, an interview to make you believe something false, or defamation for the sake of ratings and/or public scandal. In this society, especially in this appalling snowflake generation, you don't know yourself: people know you better than yourself. If you say something with an intention and it gets misinterpreted by the counterparty, forget about setting common ground for clarification. People will conclude on your behalf! What a way to regress mentally, and to go from the presumed innocent ideology to the extreme opposite: presumed guilty.
Why? Because...
"It's all a pack of lies!"
