R.I.P. Corey Yuen (1951 - 2022)
Uncut Hong Kong 97-minute version
A eulogy I wrote at my Discord server before venturing into this supremely made action extravaganza:
“It is deeply painful to hear about such a great loss in the landscape of Hong Kong cinema, one that paved the way for so many relevant and renowned directors and crew members in the field. While his mainstream work outside the U.S. turned out to be more popular, his mainland work’s importance extends to the necessity of being studied, starting with the fact it gave legend Michelle Yeoh her first leading acting role after supporting roles with Sammo Hung. Watching the Hong Kong Cut of Righting Wrongs in the server for the first time today is a wonderful opportunity to assess his charismatic and explosive influence in cinema overall, with the original ending intended to be seen before Western influence started to pay attention to Yuen. A female lead empowerer and a master of action, Yuen shall always be remembered by his working peers and friends in the industry, including Jackie Chan. Rest in peace, and thanks for your legacy!”
The first of the Seven Little Fortunes has left us; however, his work in Hong Kong is greatly underseen and has been left as a legacy to us. Unapologetic, brutal, unforgiving towards everyone, immensely original from an action development standpoint and with absurdly supreme COREYography (ye...), the film is a masterful showcase of imagination and creativity, especially the epic fight between Cynthia Rothrock and Karen Sheperd. Also, Tom Cruise who?! Biao proves once again that he’s probably one of the most insanely gifted and acrobatic stuntmen and martial artist of all times, and his stunts during the plane sequence is unparalleled... almost claiming his life!
Written by frequent John Woo collaborator Barry Wong and Cheuk-Hon Szeto (Mr. Vampire, Armour of God, Dragons Forever), and featuring a climactic fight scene “guest-directed” by legend Sammo Hung, the overall plot allows absolutely everyone to shine in their skills, even the villains (Peter Cunningham, what a way to shine!), while exploring police ethics and those supposedly “above suspicion”. Definitions of justice will collide, especially when one is based on the frustration of human incompetence. The truth is, the law of men will forever be flawed, even vigilante law. All circumvent to subjective ethics and the end will be the same: conflict and self-destruction.
It is imperative to watch the Hong Kong cut; after my first shocking watch, I saw the rest of the three(!) alternate endings, courtesy of YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion and other posts online, and quite frankly they are all nonsensical and ridiculous. The audiences’ pressure is painfully evident. Never mind the audiences’ sensibility! Leave your vision intact!
At the least, that’s what Corey Yuen deserves now.
