Arnold can make something substantially better than Boyhood (2014) with a cow, which was not even her first animal of preference (a chicken). I have no intentions of diminishing animal life below that of humans, as all Creation reflects a fraction of God’s “personality”, His entire essence. Rightfully so, this intimate cinéma vérité approach does two things particularly well:
1) It doesn’t opt for carnage sensationalism concerning the meat and milk industry
2) It is not a documentary about the everyday life of a cow; it is a project that covers years about life seen through the eyes of a cow
This cow has a man-given name: Luma, a dairy cow, a cow that now will be engrained in our memories forever, not because she is more special, but because she was kind enough to show us her life within the capitalist logic of the industry. No score is required, but only brief instances of the awful music they kept hearing at Park Farm in Kent, England.
Captivating, honest and also uncompromising, this is essential viewing for anyone interested in the dairy industry, animal lovers, cinéma verité, Andrea Arnold and even documentaries in general.
