David Cronenberg has been pioneering horror and the mind-bending absurdness we've all come to at least know about and love for quite some time now.
Now holding the torch in this new generation, Brandon Cronenberg is establishing himself as the new colonizer in the world of brain-altering plots and devious filmmaking. When you watch Infinity Pool, you know you are witnessing something from the Cronenberg family, and you will either love it or hate it.
When the wealthy and vain find something that exceeds the normal rich day-to-day, they, of course, indulge and abuse until they no longer recognize themselves and what they have turned into. Infinity Pool does just that in the form of "doubles." A punishment or a blessing, however you want to look at it. Self-loathing and brutality, along with psychedelic barbaric madness, are central to the film. Unlike his previous feat, Possessor, Brandon is walking a new path that I hope leads to excessive insanity in the future. Alexander Skarsgård kills his role that progressively gets more deranged over two hours, and the upcoming Queen of Horror, Mia Goth, turns from a seductive motherly goddess to a manic creature not to be reckoned with. Stellar thriller.
