Edwards was a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1940 to 1941, when he joined the United States Navy as a naval intelligence and gunnery officer during World War II. In 1950, he was elected president of the California Young Republicans. But he had switched parties by the time he was first elected to the House in 1962. He was the president of Valley Title Company of Santa Clara County from 1951 to 1975, and a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1964 and 1968.
Edwards started his hockey career in the juniors with the Kitchener Rangers in the OHA-Jr.. He was very successful, playing in 90 games over 2 seasons, but was not considered a high draft pick, because of his small size. Despite that, he was still picked 89th overall in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.
In his first NHL season, Edwards played in 25 games after spending last season in the AHL with the Hershey Bears. He finished the season with 16 wins, 7 losses and a 2.51 GAA.
On February 13, 1977, Edwards played a role in perhaps the most unusual event in Sabres history. A day after Edwards reported to Buffalo from Hershey, Sabres general manager Punch Imlach ordered coach Floyd Smith to have Edwards replace expected starting goaltender Al Smith:
Don Edwards (born March 20, 1939 in Boonton, New Jersey) is a cowboy singer and guitarist who performs Western music. He has recorded several albums, two of which, Saddle Songs and Songs of the Cowboy, are included in the Folklore Archives of the Library of Congress. Edwards also recorded the album High Lonesome Cowboy with Peter Rowan and Tony Rice.
In 1993 he appeared on Nanci Griffith's Grammy Award winning album Other Voices, Other Rooms on which he accompanied Griffith on a Michael Burton song entitled "Night Rider's Lament".
Edwards played the character Smokey in Robert Redford's The Horse Whisperer. Edwards also performs the song "Coyotes" that plays during the final minutes of the documentary Grizzly Man.
National Wildlife Refuge is a designation for certain protected areas of the United States managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Wildlife Refuge System is the system of public lands and waters set aside to conserve America's fish, wildlife and plants. Since PresidentTheodore Roosevelt designated Florida's Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge as the first wildlife refuge in 1903, the System has grown to over 560 national wildlife refuges and other units of the Refuge System, plus 38 wetland management districts encompassing more than 150,000,000 acres (607,028km2).
Background
The mission of the Refuge System is to manage a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and where appropriate, restoration of fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitat. The Refuge System maintains the biological integrity, diversity and environmental health of these natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.

The OHL Podcast with Don Edwards
The knock was always that he was too small. But from junior to the pros, Don Edwards didn't listen. He just stopped pucks. From the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL to a Vezina Trophy with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, Edwards would go on to play for two more teams, including his childhood favourite Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also a member of Team Canada at the 1981 Canada Cup and his story about getting into prime physical condition is not one you'll soon forget. Off the ice, Edwards's life was marked with unspeakable tragedy and, if you don't yet know the story, you'll understand why he harbours ill-will towards Canada's legal system to this day, while repeatedly appealing to keep a convicted killer behind bars.
The OHL Podcast is presented by Matt Smith Goaltending.
