Finally addressed this blind spot.
I can see why this is a classic. Nothing I can say will be new among what is thought of. Even before digital technology, Gremlins translates well. I hadn't realized that this takes place during Christmas, which only adds to why people might tend to revisit it and it's as relevant as ever.
What I will say is that I was in awe of how well the puppetry and practical effects were. They didn't look the slightest bit hokey and outdated. Heck, there were moments when it looked like Gizmo was an actual real creature. Also, a huge credit to Howie Mandel, Frank Welker, et al for superb voicework on Gizmo and the other Mogwai.
Despite this being a "creature feature" of sorts, I did sense writer Chris Columbus's touch of humor, even within the sinister aspect of the demonic Mogwai.
In many ways, this did feel like a nice time capsule of the time it was released.
