As silly and loud as it is big-hearted and appealing, Taika Waititi's "Thor: Love and Thunder" offers an expected entertainment bulldozer. Rocking and rolling through its runtime, the MCU blockbuster provides laughs, thrills, goofiness, and a leavening touch of soul.
In the spirit of its predecessor, Waititi's excellent "Thor: Ragnarok," "Thor: Love and Thunder" finds its hero on journey both emotional and physical. Here, Chris Hemsworth's Norse deity is ripped from a life of adventuring and mournful contemplation in order to take on a god killer and ally with an old flame.
Comic book story beats and self-aware narrative points collide with undertones both tragic and comedic as the tale combines absurdity, winky glee, and outsized human themes.
Waititi's storytelling matches the narrative, reveling in the color of its source material while not hesitating to lean into its dark core. Bursts of light and sound punctuate magnetic set pieces, and the film's cast matches the energy of the film's visual and sonic palette note for note.
Electric and eye catching, "Thor: Love and Thunder" is a noisy, flamboyant super hero epic. Handsomely built and excitingly executed, the film may not please fans of the sullen comic book outing. It will, however, tickle those looking for blazing, unashamed fun in their summer cinema.
